I was wondering if any of you have rebuilt/recovered your seats and made your own upholstry. I have been thinking about it, and with a little time and effort (and a girlfriend who knows how to sew) I don't see why it wouldn't be hard to get the material, strip the old upholstry off for a pattern and save yourself a ton of cash! I guess you could even replace the old foam...??? I was thinking about getting something cool and original (like Maverick) monogramed in it if you so wanted for $20 or something...

    Any thoughts??

i am actually considering that myself....i went to an upholstery shop today and i found that there is a place in town that has the supplies i need so i should be able to get the materials no problem....

i do some sewing at work.....mainly graphite sheets....but i can sew....and my sife has a sewing machine at the house....

let me know if anyone has done this...i am curious as well.....think it should be easy enough to make the templates and then sew them together..

i am just a little un easy about doing it and making mistakes and then having to take the car to a shop anyways....

I have a local shop here that does the computerized embroidering. It's similar to the computerized striping machines if you have ever seen one of those operate. Put the picture in and the machine does all the work. If you give her a good pic she can embroider it, even in multi colors. She does some awesome work. Of couse I had the Maverick logo already on my computer so I just gave it to her on a disc. I gave her the black cloth inserts and she put the logos on them. I simply gave them to my upholstery man and he sewed them into the seat covers he made for me. I had a total of $375 in the complete set of seats when they were finished.

Yes, it's black velour sewed next to the red. The sides and back are a soft black vinyl.

I recently had a set of 71 comet gt buckets recovered by an upholster. I had them changed from dark blue to red. It took a week or so. They cost about $700, but would be less if your not getting all the plastic parts dyed another color. I had him reuse the rectangular vinyl insert(with the small chrome accent) and had it dyed the same color. He also rewrapped the foam to build it up to how it originally was.The seats look sweat! It was worth the cash.

Once upon a time in a land far away (Jacksonville FL 1977) the blue in my Sprint seats was getting pretty ratty looking. My then wife and I bought some blue material that matched the grabber blue color pretty good. As I recall, it was less than $10. I dissassembled the seats and we cut out the blue panels and made new ones. Then she sewed them back together with her trusty Kenmore sewing machine. We went through a bunch of needles even though they were the heavy duty type, but we got it back together. It looked pretty good actually. So the moral of the story boys and girls, is, if your poor enough and want it bad enough, you will find a way to do it.

I thought the moral of the story would be to stay married. :D
