The red dash in our new Maverick is shot. Since I'm pretty sure finding a crack-free original dash pad is going to be next to impossible, I'm considering getting one of those plastic dash caps. Now for the question. Has anyone ever dyed or painted one of them a color other than the black they are moulded in? Have they faded or cracked from the sun beating on them? I have always used SEM products when re-coloring plastic parts and have never encountered any problems, but then again they almost always have been re-colored the same as the original color. I'm not so sure what to expect with a dash cap that will be exposed to the sun.
A lot. This car is going to be a driver, so chances are it will not see the inside of our garage too often.
I believe, at the relatively low cost they are selling at, it'd be worth a shot at painting one to see how it holds up.
I believe Dan Himes has painted one...you might wanna check with him. I wouldn't hesitate to try it though and probably will soon.
Here is mine just finished a week or so ago... The towels are gone now, I got the heating core replaced last week......
Ms Jean, My Dad did one for his 63 T-Bird about 6 or 7 years ago. It still looks great. He just keeps a sun shade on when the car isn't driven. That car has seen alot of miles since then and as I said still looks great! Thanks Jerryfow2
Jean, I've done 3 of them, both with SEM products and both turned out great and are still holding up just fine.
Since we are discussing those caps, do you install those OVER the old foam pad, or remove the foam pad first? My cap is still in the box, just not sure if there are instructions in there or not. I will probably leave it in the box until after I paint and finish the car.
I painted mine Saddle/Tan to match my interior. I do use a sunshade when parked in the sun .. otherwise it's garage kept. You don't need to glue the cap down ... it snaps over the factory pad. If for some reason it ever fades ... just pop it off .. put another coat of SEM on it and put it back in ...
Dashcap Hi all, If we get enough interest in doing another group purchase of dashcaps, please count me in for one! Regards, BaldEagleMav
I live in Lethbridge Alberta ,we have a place called Fiber New. When i frist got my Maverick the arm rests were cracked and faded . I took them in and they repaired them and redyed, they look great!
