The new Grabber I bought has a plaque on the dash that I thought was a factory dash plaque, but after doing some searching on the boards, I'm starting to wonder. How many years were dash plaques put on custom orders? What materials were they made of? Mine is a square plate that looks like brass, is mounted on the package tray, and says "This car built specifically for NAME".
Could be dealer installed... From what I understand, the only ones that were 'Ford' were only put on the initial run of cars. They were leather, to keep with the 'western' theme of Mustang, Pinto, Maverick. They were on the cars that we would refer to as 69 or 69.5 cars.
Randy, that was why I posted that I thought your car was possibly a 1970. You've explained the flat non-grabber hood and maybe this plaque is just something added later.
I thought the 1970 name plaques were leather too. I remember Craig Selvey had posted something about having one before. I have done some leather tooling and I am hoping I can find pictures of one of the leather name plaques so I can make one with my name on it for my car. My Maverick is from my birth year (1970) and that's why I own the car. I want to add some of the available options to my car since it is a base model. Things like AC, the consolette, and the leather name plaque are on my list. I have also been thinking of adding a rim blow wheel. Anyway, I hope to find some info on the leather name plaque eventually. Tommy
The initial run of Mavericks had some really neat options that the others never got. Heck, even some of the standard parts are really cool... like the key pod. Even though I would love to have a Mav with a leather badge, Rimblow wheel, embossed emblems in comfortweave, key pod, semi-auto, etc... I'd rather have a factory v8 car. Just my personal taste. I'm sure most would take the little I6/7" rear to have a 69 Grabber with all the options.
Yeah, it made sense why you posted that. I didn't specify that the badge wasn't leather, which probably added more confusion. I didn't know they were a '70 only leather thing. I'm thinking maybe this is some sort of dealer plaque. I'll post some pictures soon.
You would think they would have been dealer installed, as the factory wouldn't know the name of the person that bought the, just what dealer.
Unless it was a special order. On newer vehicles I have seen a name listed on the Window Sticker on custom orders.
I have copies of the Ford order forms used to order Mavericks, and there are no spots for the customers name, it was all done by hand in the 70's, compared to now days.
Ok, here's a 1973 Maverick order form, it's in Black & White (for some reason my scanner won't scan color today)
Dave, that form is what the dealer used when I ordered my Stallion. You are correct on no owners name going anywhere on it. The salesman used another form for my personal info, much like any form anyone has ever filled out if they ever bought a car before the puter age. Very interesting topic here guys. Dan
The previous person could've had the plaque custom made. I had one made @ a kiosk, in the local mall.....
So the early cars just came with a leather swatch wrapped in the owners manual so the dealer could stamp it theirselves? Then again, could not have the first Mavericks ordered have used a different order form than later ones? If they knew they were doing it, seems they could have done paperwork for it. When they let the initial hype-frills lapse, then so could the extra paperwork. I have no idea. This is just my thoughts.
