As many of you know, I have a 1976 Maverick, which someday will become a Stallion clone. My best friend gave me a very cool birthday present yesterday, a NOS deluxe gas cap. I believe if I have my facts correct, it is from an earlier Maverick, because it does "not" have the "Maverick" words above the steerhorn logo, and I think my original '76 had the words on it. However, that doesn't really matter to me, it looks awesome and I'm very excited to have it.

However, here is my question. This gas cap has a circular cable attached to it with an eye bolt to fasten it to the car. My original '76 Maverick did not have any kind of retaining device attached to the gas cap. Where is the correct location to put the eye bolt if I leave the cable on? Also, Is this a "good" thing to have that cable on the gas cap, or does it make it a pain in the ass to get the gas cap on and off? Another friend told me that those retainers sometimes cause the cap to drop down on the bumper extension and cause scratches. I have no idea, since I never had one with the retaining cable. Could someone shed some light on this subject!

    Thanks!

I have one that came from the factory on my '73 4 door. It does not have Maverick on it.

It also had the retaining cable. If the top center bolt is 12 o'clock, then the retaining bolt thing screws into the bolt near 2 o'clock. I think they are great. Keeps someone from stealing your gas cap. The thing you have to watch out for is it likes to hit your tail panel when it's loose and hanging by the cable. It will wear the paint off.

    Jamie,

Thanks for the input, and for the bolt location information. I wondered if I had to worry about the gas cap chipping the paint. I agree with what you said about the gas cap either being stolen (or forgotten), it would be a good idea to have it fastened to the car. I'll just have to learn to be very careful when taking it off, perhaps always carry a rag to let it rest on!

Carry a shop towel with you and place it between the cap and the tail light panel (y)
