Is it possible to get rid of the C4 detent rod and go to a cable using junkyard parts? Any type of vehicle I should be looking for that would've had a cable instead of a rod?

Might be able to use a Lokar kickdown cable kit. Another idea might be the throttle pressure cable from an AOD.

You have to reconfigure the linkage lever on the C4 to pull instead of push. (take the nut off and rotate it 180 degrees) Then connect a cable from the throttle lever (the bottom side of the throttle lever) to the down-shift lever. Adjust it so at WOT the lever on the transmission moves as far as it can.
You have just converted to a cable.

He says "detent cable", which to me is the shifter cable...

    So which is it?
Are you wanting to convert to a shifter cable, or convert the kickdown rod to cable?

I think we are all on 'different pages' here!
    Clarify...

Okay... then looks like I was the only one on the wrong page! :)
I was refering to the shifter cable.

Yes, I meant the kickdown. Is "detent" not a correct term for this?

Do you know what car (part number ) would be a good donor for this procedure?

Actually I did end up using the Lokar cable kit, part # KD20C4HT.
