Hey guys, I am new to this board. Ive heard about Ak Miller doing some turbo Fords back in the 70s and it got me wondering. I had a 70 maverick with a 250 and a TO3 turbo on it. I bought it off a co-worker who brought it here (Detroit) from California. All the turbo stuff was one-off. It used a 500 cfm Holley 2bbl that dumped gas into the turbo thru a custom water cooled aluminum intake. The chrage was blown thru an Incon tension devise (boost controller?), up into an elbow and down into the stock intake. The turbo was bolted onto a flange that was welded to the stock cast iron exhaust manifold. Car ran 12.60s on Michelin X white wall tires. I never thought about it being built by a famous shop until I read about Ak Miller and his turbo cars. So, do you think this was one of his creations?

I have never heard of them. If anyone knows the story...they are likely to be lurking here somewhere.
The only experimental turbo Fords that I have heard of were I-4's leading up to the Mustang versions in '79.

Good luck on this interesting story.

It was a really fun car. The car was originally a 200 car, but it was replaced with a built 250 at some point. Forged pistons and a copper head gasket were used to put up with the boost. The trans was a C4 with, what I was told was a reworked Pinto converter that stalled out at 3,000 rpm. The whole exhaust was built in sections that unbolted. When I went out on Saturday night Id remove the muffler. The car sounded like a wasp on acid without it. Car as it sat in the pics in 1995 had 42,000 original miles on it.

Alas I sold it and bought a 5.0 LX coupe.

Sounds like Ak Miller to me.
He was rodding and boosting Mavs since they hit the streets in 69!
I have an FPP book from 69 with one of his Mavs featured in it.

I seem to recall seeing that car at an MCCI Mini-Meet in Norwalk, Ohio many years ago.

I remember talking about it as well.....I searched way back and this is a quote from Bob Beck.

Ak Miller built a 200 in a Maverick in 1970 that ran 15 sec. E.T.s with a 3 spd. That is quicker then a 225 BHP 66 Mustang would run. There was a story on it in the Petersen Complete Book Of Fords put out in 1972. I have it stored in the attic.

If it was it was after I had sold it. The next owner painted it a Mauve color and added tweed interior. The car had burgundy interior with a Monarch power bench seat when I had it. Looked way better than what it ended up getting.

As far as I'm concerned, something like that would (or should) be more desirable than the so-called "Shelby Maverick" or Drag-N-Fly...
