Well, I've got something a little unusual to share with the faithful. One year ago we bought a '74 Maverick that was built in '99-2000 to compete in IHRA Stock Eliminator. The drivetrain is a 200" I6/C4 that fit in the former Z/SA class with a National Index of 17.05sec. The car ran respectably at 3-4 tenths under the standard and actually held IHRA records in 2000. It was sold in 2001 and sat mostly idle until last September. We took up the challenge to convert the car to small bumpers to fit the only class available to this combination, V/SA at 22lb/hp. IHRA factors this engine at 115hp in 1972 configuration. That puts minimum weight at 2530 lb. The 1/4 mile index is 15.80 for automatics; 15.55 for sticks. It's been quite a year, mostly a steep learning curve with one step forward and two back a great deal of the time. Labour Day weekend we finally managed a sub-index pass at 15.75 - 83mph. There's still lots to be achieved, the car is still about 50lb heavy and without the restrictions of budget, we could easily find more horsepower. The goal is to get to the 15.40 zone; once qualified at an event, it's just good old bracket racing. If you've never played with a modified 6 cyl, they can be challenging but lots of fun. They make a crazy sound and everyone wants to know what's under the hood. This thing has a 4000 stall converter and you can hold it with the footbrake. Just put both feet to the max and sidestep with the left!! Hopefully, there will be a picture attached that you can open
ok...now yank the 6...put a stroker in it...and have alot of fun... j/k sounds like a real good bracket racer...and consistant....especially since you dont spin the tires much on launch... good luck....and show them other people how great a mav is...
Thanks for all the praise guys, I'm going to need a larger helmet!! Here's a neat shot of one of our Ontario Super Stock cars; a '71 and original owner!!......some people are never satisfied
Sorry JJ, we were camping on the weekend...so that's what motorhomes are for The motor has the usual balance and blueprint stuff done to it....at least I think so as I bought the car turn-key. Stock Eliminator "rules" are restrictive - you are not supposed to come within a city block of the engine with anything resembling a die grinder. The tiny YF 1bbl carb is a major restriction but we're stuck with it. We use an off-the-shelf Hooker header. Ignition is Ford Duraspark(soon to be DSII), with MSD 6AL back-up. The cam is Lunati; stock lift (.370/.370) but duration is unrestricted; it's 234deg @ .050". (106deg lobe sep.) We run Crane lifters with Ford adjustable rockers. The oil pan has a crank scraper and a windage screen and the block is +.040" using stock pistons. Not much else trick, just a combination of (hopefully) the right parts. These are tough little critters as it happily buzzes up over 6000rpm. The car weighs 2750lb with the driver.
re: +.040" over with stock pistons I'd never heard of doing this until the other day and now I read it again. Less friction?
