We have a 72 Maverick Grabber w/ 302 and a C4. We drive it on the freeway a lot, what car can I find at the junk yard that will have better gears so that I'm not running the motor so fast at 70mph?
Also, what car should I pull disc brakes from?
    Thanks

Go to Maverick Info home page and click on links then click on Maverick Grabber/Comet GT. In the tech section you will find all the info you need on disc brake conversions. As far as highway gearing goes, do you know what gears you have now? Most 8in rears in Mav's have 2.79's with some exceptions such as 3.00 and 3.40. The 2.79 is good for cruising but will be a little slow in take off, the others are going to turn the rpm's a little higher at cruising speeds but will get the car moving a lot quicker off the stop lights etc. Granada and Monarchs can be a good source for gears and brakes etc. I have the axle codes for different gear ratio's in these cars if you need them, just let me know. These codes are located on a metal tag on the rearend housing usually.

Old guy is right, if you get freeway gears, it will slow down your get up and go pep. What is your primary use of the vehicle for?

If you are good working on cars, maybe u should consider a switch to a manual 5 speed t-5.

most 302 Mavs/Comets have 2.79 as Old Guy says.
you probably need an overdrive tranny.
Of course, then overdrive will be nearly useless unless on the freeway, so you'd need a low rear end gear.
I get better milage in drive as long as I keep it under 65-70.
overdrive bogs the engine too bad.
    24mpg freeway tho...

Have you thought about a larger cam?

I'll trade you my 2.79 gears for 3.0 or higher. Ideal 3.25 but 3.55's are cool too...for this trade.

I am running the overdrive on my car. My car also bogs in overdrive ,but I am still running the straight 6 gears. After I get my lower gears in it should be just about right
