Simple question. I know the firing order of the 302, but in looking at the distributor from the front, starting with the clip hold down as a starting point, goind clock wise, what are the cyclender firing points, in other words, the spark plug wire that goes in the first distributor feed (from the clip, clockwise) feeds what cylinder? You can email me at: jpleseganich@msn.com. Thanks

Not really sure of what your asking, But heres a crude drawing of what i think you may want.
This is the orignal # 1 location on stock stuff. Yours could have been changed. The cylinders are numbered 1-4 down the passenger side and 5-8 down the drivers side from the front of the engine.

You will need to set the number 1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and determine where the rotor is pointing to on the cap to determine number 1.

I guess what I was looking for was an explanation as to : On the distributor, once placed and snapped in place, do the plug wires go into pre-determined positons. In other words, would (on the distributor) the first spot on the distributor to the right of the clip down feed Number 1 cylinder, the second #5, the third #4 etc. I know that once I set the #1 cylinder to TDC, and see where rotor is pointing, I can start from there, but I guess I was looking for an easy quick reference....thanks.

#1 should be marked, then follow the firing order.

BTW is this a standard 302 or an HO. The firing orders are different.

Most distributor caps have the #1 terminal marked. From there the firing order goes around the cap counter clockwise, not clockwise. F/O for the 68-91 non H.O. 302 is 15426378. The H.O. firing order and the 94-97 pickup/van and 96-2001 Explorer 302's is 13726548. #1 cylinder is the first on the passenger side from the front, and 2,3,4 toward the rear. Left side bank is 5, 6, 7, 8

Your rotor will only point to the #1 terminal on the cap if it has been put in to correctly align it to that position. It could point anywhere if it has been removed.

if your cap has a #1 marked on it... not all do.
i set #1 cyl. to TDC and install dist. check where rotor is pointing and go from there. :yup:
some try to find a certain #1 on the cap and set the dist. to that.
it's best to check...#1 TDC before plugging the wires in...(y)

Wait., I thought the cylinder order for a "73" Mercury Comet / 302 is: #1 cylinder drivers side, closest to the radiator. The one replay above states it is the opposite side.....what is it...faceing the engine from the front (as if you are working on her) , where is the #1 cylinder, right (drivers side) or left (passengers side)?

from the front the cylinders count from the passenger side 1,2,3,4.
drivers side from the front are 5,6,7,8.:)

Wow!,,,,now let me ask, if say....a friend of mine:rolleyes:, put the plugs on the opposite, that is #1 on the drivers side (facing the engine) and so on....would the engine start, idle and run................cause......I think (my friend), did exactly that?

Ok, here is the fireing order and cylinder information: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
(Number 1 cylinder on right bank, nearest radiator). Now, is the "right bank" facing the engine, or when your sitting in the car, behind the engine?

Right bank is always the passenger side of the car. If your friend wired it like you said, it ain't gonna run period.
