I have two, basically new (one pass each) 26x8.5-14 slicks (M/T ET Drags). One is mounted on an Outlaw I and one is not mounted. The recommended wheel width for these tires is a minimum of 7.2" and a maximum of 9.2". I am searching for some 14x8 wheels and striking out. 14x7 are all over the place. I will use these on my streetable Maverick at the strip. The Mav will be equipped with a 306 in the 400-450 HP range, T-10 four-speed, and 3.89 posi 9". How much difference in the performance will there really be between using a 7" or 8" wide wheel? What am I going to hurt if I use a 7" wheel that is .2 less than the minimum?
I'd probably run it on a 7, but you can't go too low on air pressure if you do that. 8" would be the way to go.
Terry; if you use them on a 7" wheel, be sure to screw the bead into the wheels, and buy the kit that is made to do that.
hey slick , get the correct size rims...that way when the "used" slicks come apart you want blame it on the "too" small rims....i think you need to get all the tire you can "under" you, butty... ...frank...
Stocton Wheel will make any size rim with any offset. You can also get the 7" rims and have them widened another inch or so.
I can tell you right now, unless you have a line lock, you will not be able to heat them up enough. Hope they are the softest compound available.
Frank, can you read lips? Then, read this.... PPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
28x9x15 MT ET drags on a 15x7 rim. There were not screwed in and the did not spin on the rims. Running a clutch you might hit it a harder than I do, but I think you will be alright. Just make sure when you get them mounted, that they mount dry. The tire shops around here usually have their youngest, most inexperienced person mounting tires and they are not aware of the fact that the are not to "soap" them up.
I do not have my slicks bolted on the rims and they have not slipped at all. Just paint a small line across the tire and wheel. You will then be able to see if it does just by a quick glance.
Dennis; I screwed my tires to the rims, to keep the tubes from tearing at the stem. If the tire rotates, it will tear the stem out, and it could do grievous damage to quarter panels, engines, and the car in general. Besides, at the track I ran at (Va. Beach Raceway), in the Pro class, it was mandatory.
Terry, I would NOT screw your slicks to the rim. I just posted this on another thread but here it is again. http://www.alternativeauto.com/waterbox/wb_archives/hook1.html I have had much better 60's without tubes or screws. These Mustang racer know what they are doing. Bossmav
