In some pictures, I have seen a 73 Comet with dogdish hubcaps. I relish the dork look, and wonder if anyone knows of a set of thes pups.

    Thanks

My pictures never seem to be able to post.

They are the smaller, flat half size caps fitting on the center of the wheel. They have a black stripe aroung the outer edge of the cap and have 'FORD MOTOR COMPANY' stamped in black just inside of the stripe. Ford used the same caps on several cars such as early '70s Mustangs and Torinos. Some offered a colored stripe to match the body color.

The half caps are called 'dog dish' because when you put them on the ground upside down, they look like a dog food dish. That expression is generic, having nothing to do with our Mavs or any particular car for that matter, and has been around for a very long time.

They look the best on the Mavs with a set of beauty rings. The proper rings are about a 2-3/4" deep.

I didn't figure that the the term dog dish was unique to our cars but thanks for the info. are there any links that you have to pics already posted anywhere that I might get a look at these caps?

You are right those would look pretty dumb without the proper beauty rings.
But they are alright on that car.

Craig, had painted his rims the same as the body color (yellow) and left the rings off, and it looked pretty good.

Respectfully, I disagree with the assertation that the dog dishes look bad without the trim rings. Please see, http://www.iit.edu/~petebre/maverick/73comet.gif

FWIW, these hubcaps, as opposed to wheel covers, were standard equipment on most American cars, til circa 1959, when Jap cars came equipped with carpet, wheel covers, white sidewalls and radios.

These hubcaps are irreverently referred to as poverty caps in many places.

FWIW, I love the poverty/dork look to which these things contribute so well. They embody the sleeper concept and work best when combined with a 2 door post car, with no chrome and a bigass motor.

    Charles, the dork

The 'dog dishes' served a lot of cars very well for a long time. My 4 door Mav has them and looks just fine.

They don't fly off as easily when you hit potholes, either!

Hey Craig, put a beauty ring over your head and post a picture. We'll let you know if it improves the look.
