Here is the problem I have, rot in my upper door hinges. has anyone else had this problem? i have access to a donor with no rust, i may have to cut that whole section out? what causes the rust in this specific area? both sides have it..

I think it will be, it's not the hinge, it's where it mounts....The only way to repair it properly, is remove the fender, and door, cut out the rot, and rebuild it. There is a plate that moves around inside there for the hinge to mount to.

yeah, its just the over layed sheet metal which has damage, the inner wall and plate are fine as far as i can see.. this is going to be a pain!

Just as a guess, that's also a weak spot people lean on the doors etc the front metal tends to crack along there from the stress. I imagine the later cars do it worse because of the extra weight of the beam in the door. But once you get a crack there then the rust will start to take hold. Usually the drivers side only because that door gets used more. But who knows, I'll bet you find cracks along where the inside heavy piece pulls against the thinner outer metal.
