I'd like to install a good exhaust setup once I get my engine in (very soon). I have a friend who can work wonders with a torch who will do the installation as long as I get all the pipes and tell him what I want. So here my questions for you guys: 1. Can someone recommend a good set of performance headers. I see that there is not much room to work with, so I don't want to buy just any set before I know it fits. 2. Can I run two completely separate exhausts, one for each header; there seems to be space for only one cat? What's the setup like in a grabber? 3. There's no space to put a second muffler on the drivers side of the gas tank. Does a grabber have a narrower tank? 4. Is there a stock dual exhaust setup that I can buy or should I just have to my buddy rig something up custom? If there it is anyone who has converted to dual exhaust that can share any information, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Dan P.S. sorry for being so long-winded, it's just my nature to be very specific. Thank you, Dan
Dan; I have a'69.5, and duals with a 302. I used FlowTech long tube headers, and they fit very well (don't have the PN#). I have 2.25" pipes, turbo mufflers, no cats (no smog to cars before '77), and tips. I also have an H-pipe just aft of the collectors, and it sounds and words out very well. The H-pipe makes it a bit difficult to change collector gaskets, but not too bad. Good luck, and let us know. Earl
Dan, Depending on what level of sound you want, the Dyno Max #17731 mufflers will be a nice fit under both sides. They are 14 L x 9 3/4 w x 4 1/4 h by 2-1/4 pipe dia. The biggest difficulty is the sharp upsweep over the axles. But it can be done by a good shop. My system: Heddmon shorties into an X crossover to specially shaped muffler pipes that tucks them up along side the drive shaft to the mufflers. From the side of the car in a standing position at 20 feet , you can only see a little part of the crossover to muffler bend. From the rear, you just cannot hide the mufflers. Pipe from the muffler over the axle will come by the tank on the left side, with carefull tweking. Right side - no problem at all. My system, with a 2 inch lower and not a problem hitting unless there is some out of ordinary roughness where you are driving, not even normal speed bumps in parking lots. If you go with long tubes, you can have clearence problems but the rest of the system can be as I discribed if some effort is made.
Flowtech? Hey Earl, I've looked at those flowtech w/ the maverick pn# and I wanted to ask a couple more questions. Did you have to do any banging or creasing or grinding to make them work? Is your car auto or stick? If manual, have any trouble working around your clutch linkage?
I saw this post and thought maybe a picture would help you out. I have a '71 Comet parts car that has a complete dual exhaust system(no cats) that had the long tube headers attached...we removed the headers. A few days ago we dropped the whole thing in one shot so I took a picture of it to give an idea on how this can be done and here is the link:
Re: Exaust Thanks for the info everyone. Ladycomet, the pic is really helpful. I'll let you know if I need any measurements. And, you mention that that exaust came from a parts car, are you by any chance looking to get rid of it (the exaust)? Thanks, Dan
heres another way you can do it. You can still get cats under there. These are with Hooker Super Comps Part Number 6110-1
ROFLMAO! uh..that was a joke...right? (not about being able to FIT them, just that one would consider it if it's not necessary)
