Dumb question. Might have asked before. How much oil in a 7 qt pan?

Forgive me if I have asked this before. It has been a long time since I put oil in my car.

I have a 7 qt Canton oil pan. No dipstick, so not sure where FULL is.

Should I dump 7 qts in, or should I add another 1/2 qt to account for the new filter?

I know, really wouldn't make a difference either way. But just picky...

 

I think I would put 7 1/2 qts. like you said. This is when I would have a dip stick ready to use to mark with.

 

I always do the rated pan capacity + 1 quart for filter and passages. I have run race motors for over 25 years with that method.

Yea.. I kinda think the same about the filter and passages.. His passages should have some in them since he has ran the engine.. AND seems some filters are running smaller these days. I would rather be 1/4 of a qt shy than over myself.. But it will work as you say. I am sure you know more than me on it..

 

I agree gene...engine has been run recently so passages not dry. Using the largest filter i can. FL1A. So i only added another half quart.

 

Yes but you would still be ok with that other half qt.. Once I know what an engine takes I like to add some to the filter before spinning it on. May not be required but I just like doing it. I seem to recall that this was a good practice on turbo engines.. I think I read that at some point somewhere.

open a guart and fill the filter. then put 7 qrts. in the pan. mark your dipstick and fire it up, shut it off, check the level and if it's low on the full mark, add. if not, save the extra from filling the filter to put in your...oiling can...
