Dumb question--which way does the spring/plunger go in trans filter?

Spring first or plunger first into the valve body? Seems like spring first, with the plunger agains the filter would serve no purpose.

Man,, it has been a long long time, but I think the spring goes in first.

Valve in first with the stem inside spring then other end of spring against filter lip.

Yup, had the same problem myself a while back and thanks to this forum and HR-Daddy, problem solved. Spring with stem inside held by the filter.

Didn't fall out. I had the entire valve body out and torn down doing some mods to it to make it shift harder, and the last thing to put on when gettign it all back together was the spring and plunger with the filter. I took pictures of the entire process, so I knew where the little balls and springs went inside the valvebody, but just assumed I would remember how that last one went in.

Didn't. But it seemed like it would serve no purpose if the plunger was agains the filter, so I put plunger in first toward the valvebody, and spring against the filter. I guess I did it right. But just wanted to make sure.

First time for me, I must have done the opposite screw last, because I could feel the spring pushing that side out, and caught it. Now getting it back in while upside down on the floor, it popped out a couple of times, and once shot across the garage floor. Almost didn't find it.

Much easier to install with the valvebody and/or transmission out and upside down.

I did find that plug from the dipstick filler tube in the pan the first time and freaked out because I didn't know what it was. Tried to figure out where it went, then decided that since it was floating in the pan, it probably broke long ago, and it still worked, so I threw it out. It was 2-3 years later than I found out what it was on the Forum. Much relieved to find out it WAS nothing.
