Can you chrome aluminum? I have some Torque Thrust II wheels that are dull. Sure, I can buff them back out to look like chrome, but I'm looking for something a little more... maintenance free for a daily driver. I've never really heard of anything aluminum being chromed I guess.

I'm pretty sure that you can chrome AL, but you know... CHROME DON"T GET YA HOME!

It'll probably cost you more than a new set of wheels

Sure you can...just find a good reputable chroming shop. I would think there would be one around the Atlanta area but I may be wrong. Google it and see what you come up with.

Jamie the wheel guy down the road from me told me he could polish my wheels and clear powder coat them for around 60.00 each. then all the maintenance that would be needed is to wash them. Just an idea

what just1993 said, seen the guy on OCC chrome aluminum many times. but if you take the wheels off, just get them powder coated. In the old days most aluminum wheels
came with a clear coat on them.

I agree...I would seriously look into powder coating them. Would be WAY cheaper too.

I can powdercoat them clear (or almost any color) myself at work on my own time for the cost of the powder... I'd rather have them chromed though. I have some aluminum valve covers and intake pieces I want chromed also. I can also get them chromed through a place that my work uses for cheaper then average. I was just wondering if it is possible at all to chrome aluminum, since I had never really heard of chromeing aluminum.

So it costs more then a new set of torque thrust II's... in three more years those will look just as bad.

    Thanks guys.

Yes you can plate aluminum but not torque thrusts. At least any quality chromer won't plate them or any other 2 peice wheel. The chrome won't go into the crack and it will peel from there, also leaves a discoloration right up next to the crack. Maybe the old ones were cast 1 pc, they could be plated.

Mine are 1 piece wheels. They are the Torque Thrust II's by American Racing, sticker inside says they were made in September of 2002.

I don't know... I may ebay them and buy some new ones since the fronts are about an inch or so to wide annd really have to much back spaceing for a Maverick. They come a little to close for comfort to hitting the upper control arm and tie rod end. I guess I would try powdercoating them clear if I got new ones and see how that holds up. Still got a while to think about it since '69.5 isn't even 5 lug yet.

since they are alum......polish them. They will look like chrome when done.

Jamie didn't you say there was a custom bike shop across from your work? If so check with them about plating they might be able to get you a deal.

Uhh, did you read the thread at all Craig? :) LOL

They use the same place as we use. I'll talk to the guy about it when they are back at their shop everyday again. They are in downtown Atlanta filming for the biker build off show this month.

seriously.. i dont know why you would want to chrome aluminum... the point of aluminum is the natural aluminum look to the rims. if you want chrome.. get some steel rims and chrome them... but the aluminum is best when it looks natural

i would agree with everyone.. either get the rims polished and clear coated.. or powder coat them with aluminum color.
