Which should I do? And how much should I get? I want to do is entire car and trunk. Mainly floor and wheel wells. And entire trunk. Dynomat can get 20sq.ft for 70$ the and not sure how much peel and seal.
My plan as of right now is to buy enough dynamat to do the areas that need it the most (main portions of the floor pan, firewall, wheel wells and inner quarter skins) and then peel and seal the rest (roof, tunnel, remainder of trunk) to get full coverage.
I haven't done the math yet, but 20sq feet doesn't sound like much, especially once you start getting into the trunk too.
i look at sq. ft. as... a 4'x8' sheet of plywood =32 sq. ft. Dynomat = $3.50 sq. ft. Peel and Seal=$1.42 sq. ft. ...lots of threads w/pics. on this subject... ...Frank...
I did the firewall and interior floor with Peel N Seal. I think I used three of the smaller rolls that Lowes sells. I sealed all the seams with foil tape, too. If this car ever gets a cowl or window seal leak again, the water will sit on top of all this. It is a roofing product, ya' know. I followed it up with the bubble-type insulation as carpet underlayment. From what I could gather from info online, Peel-N-Seal is very good for acoustic dampening, and a bit of heat deflection. The bubble stuff is much better for heat. This is why I wasn't concerned about completely covering the wheelhouse and inside of the rear quarter. I just covered about half to cut resonance, like you might tune a drum. I have yet to field-test it.... so take it as still being a theory.
Peel and Seal comes in a 6"x25 foot roll, thats about 12-1/2 sq ft, and it cost less than $15 a roll. . I used almost 10 rolls. 3 layers on firewall, 2 layers on floor and 1 layer on the roof. I still need to buy more to do the rear wheel house. It took 1 roll to do the roof with about a 2" gap needing to be filled to complete the roof from another roll. Here (no pun intended) is a good link on soundproofing. I know this link is talking about small airplanes but the way I look at it...noise is noise, either it be in a airplane, helicopter, boat or car. http://www.soundproofing.org/infopages/soundprf.htm
Reading up on some of the other threads, peel & seal doesn't smell in the heat like roofing tar or does it go away after a while?
I used 2 big boxes of Dynamat on my car. Next time I`m going to try Eastwoods new stuff, it`s a little less expensive. I can`t find peel n seal around here.
Peel and Seal isn't made out of tar so it doesn't smell like tar. It is an asphalt base and asphalt doesn't smell like a parking lot...tar smells like a parking lot. I hear that Grace Ice and Water Shield is what they use up north. Being from the south I never seen this product so I don't know if it's the same as P&S.
i used the home depot version of peel and seal to line the trunk and back seat area on my daily driver, it made a noticible improvement in road noise and noise from my exhaust, it did smell however first couple hot days, but after that no smell is present, and its been frikken hot here last couple weeks, plugs my DD has black interior, so i think after the stuff cures no smell is present.
