Is anybody here running E85 in there race car? I was thinking about trying it. I know Tony is running it but his is a Turbo car.
I am not running E-85 but only because it isn't available here yet. When it is I will have three engine rebuilds to do so I can run 13:1 compression. I think some flat top forged pistons with a 347 stroker kit should be just about right.
Lotsa guys switching.....turbo,super charged/ high winding high compression.....my 4.6l has 14.5 to one comp ratio with trick flow heads 38cc chambers and flat top pistons with small valve reliefs......sorr havent got it all together to give a hands on account but it is good stuff.!!!! e85 is the cheapest highoctane fuel.....you do have to run more fuel as it takes about 30percent more fuel than gasoline.....So you need to upgrade your pump and carb and fuel line size in most cases!!!
I'm hoping to still use my Holley 650 DP Ultra. Just change all the jets. I want to try it but i'm worried about screwing things up.
its not that simple......you will need all new internals for your carb you can send it off and have it done.....or buy the parts and swap them yourself....all circuits in the carb have to be accounted for on the additional fuel useage....or you could sell what you got and by a new carb around 600 bucks is an average.....demon , holley etc..... Btw I maybe heading bcak out to Az phoenix to live here in a few mths.....also I waiting on an 89 bronco to arrive on a truck that I halfed owned(now fully own plus the 900 to ship) with a buddy from way back in 99 out there....its a 351w c6.....another toy to play with
here is a few vids of an e85 mustang that my engine build mirrors....these Carbed 4.6l these runs are with Nos but its still very fast mid to low 11s all motor and very streetable from talking to the guy burnout video for all the nay sayers that think 4.6l sohc do not sound good
Im waiting for Megasquirt to become flexfuel capable. The nearest station is in the next city over, so im not comfortable having a pure E85 street car yet.
It can run on E85, but it doesnt have a flex fuel feature like modern cars, where it uses a sensor to detect what fuel then adjust the injectors/timing automatically. Some guys on a Honda forum are writing the script right now, which will hopefully be ready when I save up enough to buy MS3.
I've been running it for a couple years now with good results. Much more involved then just changing the jets you will need new metering blocks air bleeds, etc fuel delivery will need to be looked at as well. I bought a kit for I think $200 and did my 750. Although at this stange in my build I think I need more carb so I'm hunting around for a good rebuildable 1050 Dominator to convert.
The reason that Holley doesn't make an E85 carb is that the entire carb has to have passages larger than a gas carb and the metering is different from Methanol. Add to that the different "Summer" and "Winter" mixes and it can be a nightmare to make it work without redesigning the emulsion tubes. That is exactly what the best E-85 carb builders do. They redesign the emulsion tubes and resize the air bleeds along with reaming all the passages and sizing the IFR and PVCR. Changing jetting is the last thing on the list of mods to make.
Sounds like a good thing to try. I'm always looking for something to spend my tax money on. Who is the best guy to send my carb to?
There are supposed to be a couple of guys on dragraceresults that are really good...one's name is Mark Sullen...can't remember the other right off my head. but if you go there and do a search, you'll find a lot of info. I bought a QuickFuels Technology 750 E85 carb towards the end of the season for my 347, and made the switch...and I LOVE it so far! Haven't been able to get enough runs on it yet to find the sweet spot, but, so far, so good. I was just getting the car going, so I was dealing with multiple new car issues...hoping to get a better handle on it this spring.
