hey im thinking of replacing the carter afb carb that i have on my 302 v8 maverick. i dont know the exact size because when i bought the car it already had the carb. its been giving me lots of problems and i was told by a mechanic that i should get a 500cmf for my car. is he right? any suggestions? i just want my car to run smoothly and not have any fuel leakeage issues. is a small carb better or a bigger carb better? HELP!!!

Years ago,I ran an edelbrock 1406 (600 cfm, electric choke) and never had any issues with it.Engine ran fine, with no overloading. The edelbrock and carter, are basically the same carb,so your setup would remain the same.If you wanted to go with the manual choke,it's p/n 1405.:tiphat:

Carter AFB and Edelbrock Performer are exactly the same carb, you can even use the same rebuild kits.

I love them both. They are easy to tune and easy to build. Before you replace it, try a rebuild kit. Also find out the CFM of the carb you have now. If you need some help with that, post the model number and we'll figure it out.

Welcome to the Madness of Old Cars! 1406's are great carbs. They are 600 cfm's. I have 5 of them on my vehicles with little to no problems.

    500cfm replacement

The Holley #4412 S is the best 500cfm on the market for a 302c.i. 2-barrel street replacement application. When you make the swap, also include a K&N replacement air filter for the Best results. Hope this will help you.

    Cheers,

    Motormouth.
