I have a Edelbrock 1405 carb on my 302 with the RPM intake, does anyone have any tips on tuning them? The car falls on its face when I floor it. I have the .096 main jets and the .073x.047 rods in right now. I live at about 3500ft. Thanks. Rod
I have the same carb on my car (there when I bought it) and the previous owner had no info on the carb, so I e-mailed Edelbrock and told them my situation. They sent me a manual for the carb at no cost. How's that for customer service ? I believe the manuals are available on-line now at the their web site. There's lots of information in the manual to aid in tuning. Hope this helps.
From your description, you have a rich condition for cruising and just barely enough for power mode. The 1405 comes stock with .100 jets and .070x.042 rods. I would put it back to that then start your chgs. One step richer would be .100 and .070-.042 rods, two steps richer would be.100 and .070x.037 rods. The secondary jets are .095 factory, 1 stage rich is.098, 2 stages is.101. Be sure your advance mehanism is working correctly in the distributor, check total advance at say 2500rpm. A step by step elimination of various problems usually will correct them in due course. Most Edelbrock's will work quite well out of the box on basic stock engines, with factory calibration. The tuning book is a wise investment as was stated. Good luck.
For those of us who don't know much... Okay, so for those of us who don't know very much of anything about carburetors (I have a 1406 and just bolted it on) what's a good reference that one could start with? I installed oxygen sensors and air/fuel ratio gauges, and they tell me that I'm very rich at idle, perfect in 3rd gear and 1700 rpm, and lean going up hills. I don' t know what jets or rods are...where should I start? Thanks, Atzy.
Edelbrock I do have the manual, and I am trying to decipher it. Why cant they write the manual for "normal" people and not for engineers? I put the old metering rods back in, and that seemed to help at crusing. I also moved the power valve rod one closer to the carb, it made the full throttle worse! So, i moved it to the furthest setting, and I will try that tomorrow. I guess it is just trial and error. As long as it doesn't get to expesive. Rod
