Here are the pics of the EFI 2.3L 4 banger test fit. The engine is out of a '93 Mustang, the transmission is a manual 4 speed overdrive trans out of my '80 Capri and is sitting in the transmission cross member with a C4 trans mount bolted up. Everything seems to fit real good. The stock Maverick drive shaft will fit, but I'll have to swap the correct yoke onto it because a C4 yoke dosen't fit in this trans. But the length is dead on as far as I can tell. The throttle cable on it in the pics is from a '78 Econoline 150 Van with a 300 I6. It'll take drilling one new hole in the firewall to make it work, but otherwise it fits and works perfect. The passenger side shock tower brace fits fine, the drivers side hits the EGR valve, but can be made to fit with a little grinding. The pic above, I removed the radiator and grill, closed the hood and stuck the camera up in there and took a pic to show the hood clearence. The big scary EFI harness. '93 Mustang motor mount/shock tower clearence. 1980 Mustang/Capri lower radiator hose. I figure I can cut it up and make it work some how. 1980 Mustang/Capri upper radiator hose. Shouldn't take much to make this work. Main obstacles to overcome right now: Find front sump oil pan and pickup from an old Pinto. This is critical, need to find it ASAP. I need to find this before I can start working on the motor mounts, so I can be sure I have the engine sitting at the right height to clear the steering center link. Figure out what I'm going to do for a fuel pump. I don't want to modify the gas tank any, so I need to find an electric pump to mount on the rear frame rail somewhere that can supply the correct PSI for the fuel injection. I figure I'll run my fuel return line into the filler neck or something. I have a few plugs on the EFI harness that don't seem to plug into anything. Tomorrow I'm going to go around to a few Mustang forums and post pics of the plugs and see If I can figure that out. I'll be working on this thing on the weekends only, I have 3 day weekends off from work through September. I'm setting the deadline for getting this thing drivable for mid October.
JAMIE As for a fuel pump you may be able to use a mid 80 f150 frame mounted boost pump . Mount the pump as low as you can in front of the fuel tank and use a 3/8 hose to feed the pump . This the way I did my EFI pump on my car . \ Jay .
I'm sure you could make a turbo fit. Without the coil packs and that old A/C compressor bracket there, there is quite a bit of room. If you notched the shock tower there would be a ton of room. I personally won't be messing with a turbo, at least not any time in the foreseeable future. Thanks for the info Jay! I'll have to go to the junkyard and check one of those out. Sounds like what I am looking for.
Interesting Jamie! I am questioning the stock fuel lines ability to supply enough fuel ... it might, you just might need the increase in pressure and the small diameter might help there. Still, I think you might be better off using the original fuel line as the return and plumbing a new feed line. Keep in mind the original is two piece with a piece of hose joining it in the middle. I have always wanted to see a Turbo T-Bird drivetrain swapped into a Mav. This is as close as we have seen yet.
Hey Jamie. When my cousin raced he used to use flexible "Universal" Radiator hoses that would fit just about anything. I think Gates http://gates.com/ made them. I also found this http://gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=4961&location_id=541&go=Unicoil
Awesome - thanks for posting this and keep the pics coming. We Oklahoma guys have been talking about this too.
The stock fuel line will be the return line. I am going to bend up a new feed using 3/8 steel brake line.
good job so far Jamie. im going to use the Ford truck efi pump as mentioned earlier on my '73 Grabber as well. part number is E2000 from your local Advance and is $99 new. looks like it's coming along better than the 3.0 project.... and to think, i crushed a pinto last year with a good oil pan still on the engine... oh, and maybe later on you might consider a T5 from a torbo coupe.... maybe the engine as well good luck!!!
Only reason I gave up on the 3.0 is because it's impossible to convert to front sump. No biggie, it's a 45k mile engine and trans, can easily get my money back out of it, and then some... T5 will definitely be in the future, just a matter of when the right deal on one comes along.
