So I need to do something about my cooling situation. The car has a V8 which was swapped for the old 6cyl. The 6cyl radiator and fan are still in place but sadly no fan shroud. Now there is a big old gap so I'm thinking it's gonna overheat any day now. I bought this Hayden Rapid-Cool from Kragen today, 16" and 1300 CFM. It's a "pusher" but I guess can be changed to a puller. So is it worth installing? It was $75.

Just mount it in front of the radiator and keep the stock fan. It will help with the airflow. Is your car factory A/C? If it is, more than likely you already have the better stock radiator in there.

Altho some fans can be wired to go the oposite direction, they aren't made to become the other, so i've been told. If the directions say it's ok or doable then yes. Other wise I tend to take it the way it reads. Pusher fan, to me, is a pusher.
Couldn't be the trans getting hot could it?

it says it's reversible. And yes, car was factory AC. I'm gonna go check and see if I can install it in the front.

I can't intall it in the front, the hood latch and the grill obstruct it. needs like 4". I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's better to keep the current fan there without a shroud or better to install this electric one that's only 1300 cfm.

Find a shroud, I am sure someone here on the forums has one you can get. But unless you upgrade the radiator to match your V8 chances are it will always run on the hot side.

no fan will cool a 67 vw beetle. there air cooled. i would get a escort or taurus elec fan. the have a really stong cfm. i dont know exactly what it is but i know its got to be at least 2500 cfm. they have a shroud that really close to the size of the mavericks radatior. have it wired with a thermastatic switch and hooked to the ac wiires so it will turn on when the ac is on.

I agree on the Escort/Taurus fan. I've compared both side by side. Main differences are the Taurus fan is a 2-speed motor (which seems to spin about the same on "high" as the Escort's single speed) and the Escort shroud is more compact and was (for me) a much easier fit. The actual fan itself is identical on the ones I compared.

I used a fan controller from Summit like this one and it keeps me cool in all conditions as long as the electrical system is up to it. (although when I had a defective battery it wasn't doing so well in traffic) It also frees up some power by not running when you don't need it, and not being one more accessory to turn with the pulleys.

OK then, taurus it is! In the meanwhile I ordered a fan shroud until I have time to do the electric fan upgrade and I put an order a while ago for an aluminum radiator so waiting for that too. What about the alternator, did you guys get a beefier one?

When I did the fan upgrade, I ran a ~100 amp alternator from an 80's F250 for a while and it worked great. But when that alt eventually died I "temporarily" put my stock one back in. I noticed no appreciable difference. I run an MSD, stereo, amp, H4 halogen lights, keyless entry reciever, and sometimes the blower and/or windshield wipers. According to my ammeter, my Duralast stock replacement alternator copes just fine. Much to my surprise.

The reason I thought I needed that 100 amp alternator ultimately turned out to be a defective Wal-Mart battery, which was a warranty replacement for the other defective Wal-Mart battery that the car came with.

there are lots of ways to upgrade the alt. the easyest way is the gm 1 wire alt. all it takes is a 10 or 8 gage wire from the alt to the positive post on the bat. i belive you can get them in 100amps. i personaly like the ford 3g alt. its a 130 amp alt but it does require some custom wireing.
