I just bought a 70 cougar for a "song." Brand new rebuilt 351C, brakes, suspension. I need to get tires, paint (straight body) and interior. That is it?

I let my wife drive it around the block and when she pulled into driveway she engaged the emergency brake. It's the pushing it down with you foot type. I get into the car and there is no handle to release the break and it is not the type of brake where you push on the peddle and it automatically comes up. If I cut the cable will it disengage? Or does anyone have another suggestion? Thank you!

    james comet/cougar now?

You ought to be able to look at the top of the pedal assembly and see a little lever that a cable (attached to a handle) or a rod (attached to handle) would attach to. If you pull this lever, it should release the brake.

If it is a pedal release or vacuum actuated, there should still be some sort of a release mechanism on the pedal assembly, near the top.

Just look up under the dash.

I can't remember for the life of me, but some car I drove, you press the e brake further and let off and it releases... messed me up.
If you cut the cable it will release, but I wouldn't do that. I'd disassemble the e brake pedal and lock assembly first.
