Anyone have any suggestions for engine compartment prep? What products do you use? Its a '72 Maverick. Not sure what paint Ford used on it.

I power washed with detergent but lots of stains remain. Will be painting it white so need to get it clean underneath. Could go black but would like to keep it original. Prefer not to sand blast. Paint stripper? Thanks for any suggestions.

Go to your local dollar store and buy 4-5 cans of OVEN Cleaner.Thats rite. make sure all exterior paint is protected and just pretend u r cleaning a oven. apply and wait 1/2 hr. rince well and put second coat and wait 1/2 hr. do this a couple of times and all grease should be gone. sand with 180 or 220 and tach and clean. let dry and then paint. Worked just fine and after 2 yrs of local driving and some to the fair USof A, still looks great and easy to clean. some people don't think it works but just think how it works in a oven with that baked on grease crap. Now I did paint my engine compartment with epoxy paint in rattle cans. Still get positive comments on how great the engine compartment looks. :) hope this helps. Ron

I used ZEP industrial purple cleaner and a 3,500 psi pressure washer.

    Even took paint off ;)

I heard of engine decreasers being used and then pressure wash. Rattle can is popular when I was researching what to do. There was a good car craft article about it.
