After reading all the tech stuff I could on the engine transfer from the straight 6 to a 302 I'm tempted to do this...I threw a rod through my block so I've pretty much ruled out rebuilding my 250. Now it's whether I should buy: 1 a new block and have the head ported/polished and have the warrenty on the new engine, 2 get a block from the junk yard and rebuild block, 3 get a runner from the junkyard and hope it's not a lemon or get a 302 runner and still hope it's not a lemon.....any advice...which would be most cost effective? What would you do?

Crate engine may be a good thing. You get a tested engine, mostly complete, with a warranty and at a price that may be close to what it would cost to rebuild an engine. Give it a look.

IMO, you just can't beat the power and responsiveness of a good running V8, as long as it's not hampered by low compression, a ton of emmisions equipment and restrictive intake and exhaust.
I'd build a V8 and do the swap.

    IMHO

I liked the crate when I did it. If you're just starting out and don't know much, it's almost a no-brainer. Almost all the parts are there already, there's a great warranty, and you know exactly what you're buying. That, and there's enough lee-way such that you can tailor it to your own needs if you like.

    Good Luck!

if you really really really love your maverick, then the only true thing that you can really do for it is swap to a 302. Of course, if you don't have the dedication for it, then it is the worst thing you can ever do.(an uncompleted project usually winds up junked, and there are few enough mavericks left already!) If you are just looking for an easy-fix it it get the thing running, then everyone is right, get the crate engine, or take our chances with a junk yard motor.

well just as an update....I ended up getting a runner out of a 79 Granada still the 250 but I only paid $250 for it as well. Run great and it will get me through until funds are available for the 302 project. next step replacing the floor and getting the cosmetics done. Jermey.... I agree with your comment but funds aren't there to do it the right way at the moment...not to mention at this price I couldn't pass it up because now I can put the money into the body/interior. thanks for the suggestions
