I’m facing a new battle with the Maverick… Replacing the head gaskets.
On my Quest to rebuild the top half of my motor…. I need some guidance.
First….what kind of gaskets will have excellent mileage at a reasonable price?
Second….What parts are involved for replacing the head gaskets? (manifold gasket…)
Third… what else can I do, or check once I’ve gone this far into my quest?

We all know how frustrating it is to have something apart, and realize u need another thing before u can put it back together… I also recall a ticking in one of my lifters…

Before any answers to your questions, need to know how many miles on the engine and is it a daily driver or street/strip etc.

For the money I would buy the complete overhaul kit from Fel-Pro. The head gaskets and intakes probably cost pretty close to the kit price if bought seperate. First thing is to drain the radiator and block(if you have drain cocks or plugs, some are a pain to get at) remove all wires and lines etc. Loosen the exhaust manifolds from the heads, remove the intake manifold. Loosen the rocker arm nuts and remove the head bolts, lift off the heads and catch the push rods as they come out. Wire brush the heads off and clean with a good degreaser, now comes the inspection and deciding to have the heads reworked or not. Highly reommend it, valve job seals etc. Lifters are another call by you, CHANGE em is my opinion.

Clean and keep as much stuff out of the cyl. as possable. air compressor is almost a must to blow out crap and stuff. Reassemble in reverse(shop manuals are a real help here) then change the oil and filter(probably has some anti freeze and junk from the disassembly in it. Would take to long to describe each step but a manual and further post questions should get you through it ok By the way, you will probably only have a few gaskets left out of the kit but keep them for spares(water pump, oil pan and fuel pump etc.

I also like to keep a shop vac going in one hand while I'm using a razor blade to scrape the block deck surface keeping things nice and clean!!
