Hey everyone ive been deeling with exhaust smell inside my cabin of the 71 ford maverick v8 for over a yr now... I have no clue what the problem might be but the smell is driving me crazy... I end up with headaches after a drive and my clothes smells like gasoline... Ive taken to a few shops and they havent been able to find the problem... Anybody had this problem before and found a solution? All I get at shops is that it smells because car doesnt have cats...

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
It should have some smell because it doesn't have a cat, but it should not be unbearable at all.

Where does the exhaust tailpipe exit under the rear seats? or behind the valance?

Check the floors for holes(rust), check the seam sealer condition along with all the weatherstripping.

And since you're getting a strong odor check the fuel mixture settings on the carb.

If your smelling gas, check that your vapor canister is hooked up and if you removed it, that the line is plugged. Check your fuel tank for leaks around the filler neck that could accumulate in the trunk.
If this is actually an exhaust leak, it shouldn't smell like gas. You're running way to rich if it does! :)

Does your car have a cowl to hood seal?

I had the same problem, went through all those steps. Crawled under the car and saw there was more swiss than cheese in my muffler pipes. So ..when all else fails look at the exhaust, then follow the other steps to improve performance of your system. And reduce exhaust smells in the car.
