Can anybody who has a factory floor shift Automatic in their car tell me if the screws holding down the chrome bezel....if they are painted black or left a natural finish? Seems like they would be black since they are mounted in the black part of the bezel. Thanks
Unfinished.... ...at least that is the way mine were in 1984. I think I used s/s in mine after replacing the shifter bezel with the Scott Drake reproduction piece. I remember this because I painted my screws black back then. Seth
Craig ... With all the detail you are putting in that car ... it ain't time to get cheap now! Here is a picture of mine with stainless screws .. wouldn't be hard to put a dab of black paint on them though ... I didn't put the screws in yet in this picture but the repop bezel and handle sure look pretty!
My bezel is decent looking. I think I will repaint the black on it and polish up the chrome and it will look nice. I did get a new seal to put on it. I think I will paint the screws as well.
Not sure why ... but the new seal on mine is already shredded ... it gets caught on the shift handle pretty easy. Maybe coating it with brake fluid would keep it slick enough not to get ripped to shreds ....
Come on Craig...Get a NEW bezel!!! The 71 Grabber I bought in 74 had chrome or natural heads. I know they weren't black. I use stainless now also.
Dan; mine did the same thing. Put a new seal in, and used a cheap silicon spray to lube it with. Seems to be doing ok. Never thought about brake fluid.
Brake Fluid will be absorbed and remain in the rubber seal ... might last longer than the silicon spray? Next time I'm at Mustangs Unlimited I'll pick up a new seal (or two) and try it ... Not sure how many miles I've driven it since I bought it (was almost two years ago ... can't believe it ...) but I have 1200 miles on the new engine ... so figure maybe 1500 miles on the shifter seal ...
I put a new seal on mine and it didn't last one shift. They are a waste of money. I polished my chrome and repainted the black. I polished stainless steel screws and put them in there. Make sure you leave the screw heads in a uniform position.
