And I didn't change a thing! My best time was 13.745 @ 100.11, with a blazing 2.129 60' Also ran 13.790 @ 100.42 on the previous run. Did not get alot of runs in, will get to that in the next post..
I was going to take my slicks tonight, but mounting my driveshaft loop turned out to be more time consuming than I anticipated. So anyway... my first three runs were TERRIBLE! My engine would stumble and/or die after I did my burnout and let off the gas, then when I would launch, it would stumble again, and I'd have to let up and then get back into it. Checked the timing, had to pull the distributor and turn it (several times ) so I could advance the timing past about 30* at 3000 rpm before the dist hit the thermostat housing. Finally got another pass in after that, and it was back closer to normal, around 14.3 sec, but still with a bit of a stumble after just warming the tires a little. Backed off the timing, did a short dry-hop, and finally got a good run and broke into the 13's. Decided to go ahead and make one more run, and got my best time of the night, then drove home, didn't even stop in the pits (was after the 10pm curfiew for the track). Hmm, I am starting to think I am hooked. Gotta be content, this is turning into an expensive pasttime. :chillpill
congratulations. 13.50's here i come. just remember as it gets hotter you'll probably slow down a bit.
Congratulations. The stumble you spoke of could be the carb "loading up". Usually, throwing the tranny in neutral (are depressing the clutch) and rapping the engine a few times will get the carb back to normal. Of course I could be full of balony too, so good luck.
Yes, tirespin is a major problem. I had to start lanching at 2000 rpm and slowly getting into the throttle or the tires just start spinning. The gears are 3.40's that I installed shortly after getting the car together. I have read that on there many times about the carb loading up, so I did put the tranny in neutral and rev it up a couple times after heating up the tires, maybe I didn't do it enough to get rid of all the fuel. All I know is I better figure it out soon, because when I put the slicks on I am going to have to heat them up more than my street tires. I've gone to not doing any kind of burnout on the street tires, and then easing into the throttle off the line to get my best times. I am making it up once I get the pedal all the way down. Which reminds me.. I did change one thing. I replaced the tiny factory line from the 77 with the one off of the Grabber, which oddly enough was big enough the line from the 77 almost goes inside it. Strange since the Grabber had a 200-six in it. Pretty sure it's 3/8, though I have not measured.
good job.. what are your engine specs and all that... to see where i need to be.. i am at 14.5 at 3000' elevation in tucson.. now that i am 755' i dont know what it will run.. i am going next friday to cordova and run it to get a baseline..
Ok either you have signatures turned off or you just don't read them, because my specs have always been in there. Sorry had to give you a hard time about that. Just in case, here they are: 77 2dr: 5.0 bored .030 over, Comp Cams XE266HR roller cam (.544/.555 lift), Stealth intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, Edelbrock RPM heads, forged pistons 9.8:1 CR, C4 trans, 2400 RPM stall converter, 3.40 peg-leg (not for long) gears, MSD 6AL + Duraspark II dist. Tires are 235/60-14 Firestone Firehawk SS/20 tires. They actually grip pretty decent compared to the tires on my slots, they just can't handle full throttle from a stop. If I think of anything else I will add it. Good luck next week at Cordova! Thanks everyone for the congrats. I was so psyched when I finally got back to the pits and looked down at my timeslip. I used to look at them right after picking them up, but after 4 runs in a row a hair over 14 flat, I got disgusted and quit doing it. Hey, I just realized something -- I need my driveshaft loop even without the slicks because I ran faster than 13.99! (Track rules, not sure if that is an NHRA rule or not.)
And I am guessing you didn't install the mini-spool yet either. So add slicks and a posi and get rid of the stumble. I see a new personal best the next time out.
This is something cool the track is doing for grudge racers. They started a 100mph club this year. The first time you go over 100 mph you get a t-shirt and a sticker, and there are stickers for 110, 120, 130, etc. I didn't go quite as fast as I did last August, but they didn't have a club then and I barely squeaked in with a 100.42 last night. It's kind of a neat deal to promote the 'grudge racing' as they call test and tune night, since you can take your buddy out and race him at the track.
