Finally got my 72 Grabber clone ready to try out at the track. There's test and tune at Irwindale on Thursdays so I'm going to try it out tomorrow. I hope the engine, tranny and everything else holds up. Its a nice, safe, 1/8 mile track, good for my first runs. I drag raced my 72 Grabber back in '88 when I was 15 and 16, and only raced twice last year-once with each of my Mavericks. All my racing has been in slooooow cars, so this should be fun. My only goal this time out is to not break anything. Hope to post pics and report soon. Maverick Man: maybe you can meet me there. I'll be by myself and could use some company (help). I'll be there from 4 to probably 10PM. I'll PM you my cell #.
Good Luck Eric, hope that new motor is everything you wanted it to be, get some pics and times up...I'd like to see the results of all that hard work.
How'd it go, Erick? Did you bring home the 1st place trophy and all the ca$h! If not, I'm sure it was fun just the same.
It went better than expected. I was hoping to get it in the 8's and didn't have high expectations for my times. The engine and tranny worked well and my BFG Drag radials hooked up pretty good too. The best part is that nothing major broke. My first run my shifter linkage came off after shifting to 2nd gear but I still went a 7.92 at 80 mph after letting off . My only clean run I went 7.42 sec in 1/8, 93.3 mph, and 1.70 60', so I was really stoked. I shifted at 6,000 rpm, left the line soft at 3,000rpm with a 5,000rpm stall, had real conservative timing, and only have 3.40 gears, so there's still room for improvement. It seemed like a long road to finally get the car finished and go racing, but it was well worth it...I can't wait to go again...and again...and again.
Major Grats! Those are VERY respectful times for the first time out! Remind me again of your engine combo, pls? :16suspect
I was very suprised and pleased that the car did what it did the first time out. The help, support and motivation from this board was great. My engine is a 331, stock block w/ girdle and windage tray, 13:1 compression Probe pistons, forged Scat crank and rods, AFR 205 heads, Comp Cams 268/276 @ .050" & 0.673 lift, Probe shaft rockers, Victor Jr. intake, Quick Fuel Technology 750cfm race carb, and regular 1 5/8" Hooker 6901 headers. I rebuilt the C4 with decent stuff inside and a 9.5", 5,000 stall converter. The suspension is all stock and needs to be redone. I need a 9" rear end. Anyone have one for sale?
Oh yeah After I get all the suspension worked out, the tune as good as I can get it, and I'm going as fast as I can n/a, I'm going to start bottle feeding it. Probably will take me at least one year or so to get there.
dude sorry i couldnt make it.. i was all this week. wow your car did really well! i'm sure you can get that thing into the 7:20s no problem. you got about 5mphs over me in the 1/8! i'm sure you smoke me by at least 3 cars but yes please let me know the next time you go.. give me at least a weeks notice coo? but glad to hear it went well!
Outstanding time! That sounds like a heckuva buildup. <--- Moves yet another spot down the timeslip database, creeping closer to page 3.
