I've been outta work so long now that it has really put a dampner on my project Maverick. FWIW, I start a new job next Monday (yay me!) so maybe I'll have a few more pennies to spend on it. On to the update and why this thread is in Drag Racing. For those who don't remember, I'm putting a 347 that was in my '90 Mustang Convertible into a strip-only 1970 Maverick. The engine has only about 2500 miles or so on it. I ran a best of 7.2 @ 101mph in the 1/8th on a 175 shot of N20 and slicks in the vert (1.59 60'). The engine had a Cobra intake and Windsor Jr. Iron heads at the time (in a 3400lb car). I've since gone to AFR 185 heads and a Holley Systemax II Intake (yes, it's staying EFI) after putting the engine in the Maverick. The Maverick has a C4, the Mustang had an AOD. Suffice it to say, I expect to be a few tenths faster in the Maverick. Now, onto the latest, although very minor, update: The motor was a very expensive project for me (especially to have someone else build it). I don't want to destroy it by having a nitrous back-fire so, in order to help keep it alive by helping prevent N20 backfires, I purchased a MSD Digital RPM Activated Window Switch (PN MSD 8969)to keep the nitrous from being able to come on at rpms below 3k (or whatever I determine to set it at). I also purchased a HOBBS switch (PN TNW-16006) which prevents the nitrous from coming when fuel pressure is below 30psi. I also have a Timing Retard (MSD 8982) which retards the timing by 8 degrees (with the 8 pill in it now) to help prevent detonation (only activated when nitrous is on). Little by little, with every precious dollar I can spare, it goes into the Maverick - and more specifically, to help spare the engine and all it's rebiuild cost and headaches by helping prevent nitrous back-fires. There'll be lots more money spent on engine and personal safety before it's over. I hope to have more frequent updates soon. That's all for now, folks!
That's great to hear the news on the job Rick and making some progress on the Mav is even better news, it's interesting to see a build that's out of the ordinary
Rick that is gonna be a sweet car for sure!!!!Mine is down again the pin on the front of the cam snapped and thus caused mine to jump time by looking at the pin it looks like I had a faulty part....and looks like i have atleast 5 bent valves, but atleast it's not a complete failure. I hope to get one test and tune in yet this year(Mo-Kan runs thru nov.) I run the same retard box and I have an NOS low fuel pressure cut out switch(though my bottle is still empty and I have yet to squeeze the button )I understand the comments on the money.....mine will have to wait a few weeks till I can afford to get it back together atleast I had a chance to really drive it for the first time since I bought the car 2 years ago. sorry so long and I did'nt mean to hijack your thread just wanted to tell you on my luck keep up the great work!!!
Rick, that is fantastic news on the new job, I hope it's all you want it to be. I was out of work for nine months before I got the job I now have. I got my Maverick on the road while drawing unemployment and franticly looking for work. I can't wait to read your descriptions of the great times you'll no doubt have with your fantastic car. By the way that has to be one of the hottest looking engine compartments I've seen in a Maverick.
its like I once heard.,..... "if you are going to error.........error on the side of overkill!" I am with you, I would rather be safe than sorry! Good job.
Robert, tough luck on your cam index pin. That's not the first I've heard of that happening. Good luck at getting back to the track soon. Allan, the car was originally equiped with the small 6. It was a rolling chassis when I got it. Thanks for everyone's encouraging words. It means a lot coming from my friends here on mmb. I love you all, man.
