Finally got a decent day to go to the test-n-tune. First weekend in about 3-4 weeks that it has not been raining or 30 degrees--or both. Old Guy & I both were anxious to get out there and into the cars. His Fairmont did great. The 331 is showing signs of being a muscular engine for sure. Sure like the sound of it too! My Maverick was surprising...and not only for the spectators. Set a new best ET/MPH...actually dad & I both did. Loved the cackle of the 414w and the smell of alcohol. My first pass was a wash....crappy burnout (haven't been in this thing since August of last year) pulled to the line, had the fan on & motor temp was only 130 at best. Hit the throttle...hooked then immediately headed for the guard rail. Went 10.55 in the 1000'...with a miserable 2.56 60' time. Dad did the same thing, except he beat my times with a 9.50-something and 104 mph...again, sideways the entire run. After a few cars layed down some fresh rubber, I tried again....good burnout, got staged..this time the motor was about 150 deg and left...front end up--man I was not ready for it. I got it as straight as I could and hammered it--went 8.15/122...not really trying for a good ET. I was just getting used to it again. One final run--finally getting used to it again. Left the line, again front end up for a good 40-50' and crossed the stripe @ 7300. Got to the other end, figured it was good for an 8.10 or so...slip says 8.03/124 mph...and a 1.36 60'. I was surprised. Dad ran against me at the last run, went 9.27/108 I believe...which is about as fast as I've seen that car go. Only bad thing is that dad's limiter does not work on the 6AL box--we can't figure that one out. We wired in a 2 step to keep the RPM down at the burnout, but neither the limiter on the 6AL box itself or the 2 step are working. We even put a 3000 chip in the box directly...still nothing. I don't know--guess we will have to call MSD tomorrow and see what's up. All in all---good day. Couldn't have asked for nicer weather either. 75 degrees, high humidity....but no complaints here, at least it wasn't 35 and raining. What about the rest of you? Anyone else get to go pound on your cars?
Two tracks here in Houston had great record-setting race days but I couldn't make either one as the flu has absolutely kicked my azz this weekend. Congrats on your new pb!
we got rained out at firebird in phoenix today. but i did take the car to the shop for some bodywork and a new paint job. said it'll be ready next week.btw, glad to hear your day was good.
Hang in there Rick, I have had the crap for over a week. Really should not have went to the track yesterday, but had to get out of the house and see if things would get better. Hope you get to feeling good soon.
I am still sick but like a good employee on way to work this morning Saturady night was the worst though 103 temp I needed a couple:chillpill
Welp, I agree... i went up to the races just to spectate since my car isn't up yet, boy do I hate going and not being able to race. Both the maverick and the fairmount very well I think. I DID however get to "race" i guess you would call it. A buddy of ours bought a 96 Dodge Indy Pacetruck w/ the 360 in it. He wanted me to "run the hell out of it" as he said. So I ran it 4 or 5 times. Leaving it in drive (as not to tear the old turd up) and holding it on the floor it ran a 13.30 at 85mph. One of the slower vehicles I've ran, but boy was it fun, just because I was racing again. I can't wait to get the 396 FE 66 F-100, and the Comet back up to the track and see what I can run outta them. RACING SEASON HAS BEGAN!
Great stuff...one of our tracks here has shut down for good and the other hasn't opened back up yet...no matter I guess..I'm not gonna be ready for about a month anyways...I should say the vehicle won't be ready...I STAY ON READY
i'm getting ready for some racing. guess i'll take friday off and head for the nationals at firebird. went to tucson today. while on the way there i was passed by 2 of earnhart jrs trailers, also jeff gordons, jeff burtons, tony stewart, kevin harvick and about 20 others. coming back i passed some drag race cars from maine and new jersey, also lots of texas and az trailers. funny what just seeing them makes you want to be at the races.
