    hi all
i finaly went to see the mav. that was for sale locally
it's a 1977 4dr 6 cyl. very basic car (not even a radio) and it's yellow in color, yuk but has black interior
    it has 79000 original miles
    has many new parts
seems to run and drives good
i did the cowl vent leak test and no water ran inside the car(i used a garden hose)
the floor boards are solid with some surfast rust the carpet is trashed but the rest of the interior is good
also the frame rails seems solid as i can tell
some rust under the doors and quarters
    now the bad:slap:
front fenders rotted by bumper (i mean gone, side marker lights just hanging by wires and it passed state inspection)
hood flew open when he drove it one time (damaged by cowl)
muffler fell off, and it needs shocks and springs
and extremely very dirty(i mean just running it thru a car wash won't clean it up, if you know what i mean)
    all this for $500.00
i like the 4 dr better than the 2 dr and like the basicness
i don't like trim or moldings on a old car
i also like the 6 cyl engine and the big bumpers (big bumper fan)
the car is perfect for me to use as a daily driver and seems that i can do most of the repairs myself
but i don't know if it's worth $500 bucks (he was asking $750 for it) it's going to need 2 fenders and a hood for starters, i would no way drive it with the side marker lights hanging down
so what you guys think should i buy it or pass it up?(and maybe it's the only mav in rochester, n.y.)
can i get fenders for 4 dr or are they the same as a 2 dr?
the guy wants to know soon if i want it
    thanks

fenders and hoods are the same for 2 or 4 doors. :) p.s. i think the price is high for a car in that condition.

yeah thats more than i'd pay, MAYBE if it was a 2dr and maybe if it was a V8. sounds like a $200 parts car to me, the fact thats it tagged might make it worth more to someone who just needs a set of wheels to get around though. as far as the fenders, maverick/comet/2dr/4dr are all the same and all maverick hoods are the same, the later one have FORD spelled out while the earlier ones dont.

Without seeing it, going by your facts, and being in the rust belt. Not a bad deal. Hood and fenders easy enough to replace, check out the quarters real good. If there are no surprises, I would go for it!

Dont forget if you take a road trip down south for rust free, you'll have at least $300 in a cheap travel trip. I would go for it! Good Luck

Whoa, I don't know that a 4-door, big-bumper, 6-cyl Maverick, in the condition described above would be worth more than the cost of gas to get it back to your house...

If you like it and you like the price, buy it.

Ditto.... I had a neighbor that was a car dealer and he was always hearing the Man I got jipped because so-in-so got a better price than me.

He said something that made sense and it is how I judge all my car purchases.

If I like the car, can afford the car or the monthly payment and am happy with the deal the moment I sign the paperwork then I got a great deal regardless of what anyone else "would have paid" or "could have gottent he car for a cheaper price".

You pay what you pay and if it is worth it to you at the time of the sale, then you gor a great deal.

I picked up a '70 I6 200 running with 2-3 radios, granada spindles (complete) and some other goodies in the trunk for $150 bucks. The $150 was what the guy put into the spindles to have rotors turned and spindles cleaned up etc. It was a basket case... It needed doors and hood. The rest of the car was in really good shape. Only rust was on the doors, hood and right rear qtr. panel. I wish I would have taken pics of the car the day I brought it home (because it was the laughing stock of the neighborhood), but I looked beyond that and used Derricks car as motivation. His car was the first I seen of it's kind.

Put a lot of time and money into the car and it does not even look the same. I took it by the guys house that sold it to me and he could not stop laughing. I bought the doors and hood from members on this forum. All three pieces were in superb condition. My bosy guy was happy to get his hands on it and straighten everyting out. The car now is probably in better shape than new.

This may not be a bad deal. You have to think of what your purposes for the car is. $500 is really nothing for a classic... including a Maverick.

well he won't go less than $500
i'm going to let him know tomorrow
he has had just recently replaced the starter and battery a few days ago (he's still driving it)
i know you guys like the 2 dr. v8 small bumper mavs
but i like the 4 dr., IL 6, big bumper ones
if i buy it, i will just replace the 2 fenders (if i can find them)and drive it for now and work on the body little by little
again thanks guys for your help
and hopefully you guys can help me in the future if i do decide to buy Mavine (that will be her name since i will have her painted red) and will match nicely with the black interior

Re: Finally went to see the Maverick

    Hi 70's,

Let me just put in another plug for you to buy the car:

If you like the car, you can afford it and it's worth it to you at $500, then go ahead and buy it.

In my opinion, this is an area where all of the advice in the world means nothing. You have to make your own decision and live with it.

Yes, you might have gotten a better deal on a different car with a more motivated seller - you might even get a better deal from this same seller if you wait a little while. But, you might also lose the car to another buyer who is more motivated to buy than you are!

    My 2 cents,
    BaldEagleMav
