Has anyone out there patched the front lip of a rusted grabber hood with a stock hood?? How did you do it?

Is the rust on the inside of the hood or the outside? We have fixed up a few rusted hoods in our shop by removing all the rust we can and putting fiberglass over the bad spots. With the fiberglass we can sand it to meet the contures of the inside of the hood quite well and we have had no problems with the glass bubbling out or the rust returning. Normally we replace rusted areas with new metal, but with the inside hood lip we are still working on a way to do it and keep the finished product stock looking. Hope this helps.

    Re: hood repair

If I were to have to work on a hood with rust there would be several things to consider.
Cutting rust out is one way, provided there is still ample support for something like dynaglass or fiberglass to fill the cutouts.
I would recommend sand or bead blasting all rusted areas and a good sealer to keep it from coming back.
I would not use bondo in a hood due to heat and vibration unless we were talking about a very small area.

A good body repairperson or skilled welder or metal fabricator can cut the nose off and add a nose from another hood. It takes skill and proper tools to weld and grind without overheating the metal causing warpage and a big mess.

Maybe better yet and possibly more affordable if you are hiring this work out, there are fiberglass hoods made for the Grabbers.

I am going to repair a grabber hood that I have. It has rust on the underneath portion in the strength area's. What I will do is document what I do with pics and post the progress here. I plan to start sometime in December.

My Grabber hood looked great after using fiberglass, but this is what it looked like after a minor impact

update on my hood, An old friend has started a business of Media blasting and powdercoating etc. He was injured about a month ago and broke a vertabrae in his neck ( same deal that happened to me some years ago) He is recuperating and is very lucky, and is expected to make a full recovery. I too was very lucky and made a near full recovery. So when I do get the hood back, I will photo the procedure on how I think the best way to repair this demon of rust, on these hoods is accomplished.

yes, going with a grabber hood. I have grown tired of the snorkel hood that had been on for 26 years.
