I have installed a 331 roller motor. Not sure what year engine it is. Will the old 157 tooth flex plate work with an early 70's C4? Does the later model 302 require a later model flexplate? I'm pretty sure the engine is from an 87 or later. It has a B&M 3000 stall converter.
It came with a stock late model harmonic balancer. I bought it second hand so I'm not sure as bad as that sounds.
I replied to your PM ... but a late model roller SHOULD be a 50oz imbalance if using the stock crank... so you will need the matching flexplate and Harmonic Balancer. My engine is a 1995 Roller 5.0 ... I used the factory damper in the front and a 50oz imbalance 164T flywheel in the back.
Ouch, I would either try and contact previous owner and see what he could tell you or try and call the machine shop that built the motor if you know who it was. It could be 0oz, 28oz, 50oz balance anything more really is just guessing Maybe take the oil pan off and see if you can find any info on the crank, this would get you going in the right direction.
the year of the block doesnt mater. its the crank shaft that determines the balance. the best way to solve this is to take the crank rods pistons and balancer to an engine machine shop and have it balance and for them to provide the flex plate.
It is a Scat rotating assembly. I contacted them today and they said that all their 331 kits are 28oz early Ford. I broke in the cam with the 50oz damper but thats all. My transmission will not go into gear, so I figured I might have the wrong flex plate throwing things out of whack. I currently have the early flex plate on it. I'm thinking torque converter maybe?????
Did the tranny slide tight against engine block or was it forced? Please explain, not going into gear,,,, shift lever wont move or driveshaft wont turn?
Are you 100% absolutely without a doubt sure that it is a Scat rotating assembly??????] Just saying that sometimes when people are selling something, I always like to visually see for sure. Not saying thats what happened just saying I would make sure I was for sure or all that money will go to waste real quick if it comes apart. And as dkstuck said need more info on the problem.
Yes. The crank has the Scat embelem cast into it along with the rod nuts and SRP pistons most of their kits come with.
The tranny slid right into place no forcing. I have a rachet shifter but I unhooked it and cycled through the gears manually from underneath just to make sure. It's like the torque converter simply won't engage and then there is that noise I cant describe from around the bell housing. You really have to stick your head down in there to hear it but its there. The crank has the Scat logo cast into it as well as the rod nuts. It came with SRP pistons (JE) as most of their kits do. The machine shop that polished the crank and shotpeened the rods said everything looked on the up & up.
Thanks to y'all that responded to this thread. I think we have the transmission problem figured out. Most of all y'all steered me in the right direction about the crank balance and may have saved my engine. Again thanks a million.
