How many quarts does a typical C4 transmission hold, after a complete fluid change? Drained the torque converter, and changed the filter. A while back, the tranny quit working, I suspected the fuid type may have been wrong, (mercon dextron 3) Is type F all that should be used?? I havent drove it in a while, and getting it out for the summer. I found no clutch material in the pan, the vacuum modualtor was damaged, so I am swapping it out, (like it was dropped on the floor of something) But no damage otherwise,, Before I fired it up, the fluid level was way full,,, started it up, and nothing showed on the stick, and no drive in any gear. I did not push the issue,,, figured it needed to be serviced. I got a pan fill tranny sitting on the floor ready to go if this one dont wake back up. Chad
YEs... type F is what is used in C4s I'd safely bet 5 quarts if you drain it... Id buy 6 or 7 to be safe... put 4 quarts in it... fire it up, run it thru the gears, check the fluid level and go from there... Then add a quart at a time until its full
He said he is draining the converter. Besides if your going to change the fluid you might as well do it all the way. No sense in leaving the old stuff in.
Sorry I didnt see that he drained the converter. I wouldnt dump 10 quarts in it and call it good tho. Do as I mentioned in the first post...dump 6 quarts in instead of the 4 i said to start with, and then add a quart at a time until it is full. This way you dont over fill it
Put two quarts of type "F" into the converter before installing it. put four quarts in to the transmission, start the car and fill it to just below the add mark while the engine is running in park. Test drive it while it is still on the stands, putting it through all the gears. Put it back in park and check the level again. Fill it to just half way between the full and add mark. take it off the stands and drive it gently for the first couple of days. Keep an eye on the level and watch for leaks.
