just got my hands on a running 89 5.0 HO motor. going to put my 71 C4 behind it. i have been told i need a 50oz flywheel to balance the motor with the tranny.

who carries said flywheel and what kind of cost?

thanks in advance for the help.

You need to match the number of teeth on your old flexplate, and you need to match the balance on the motor.

So your old flywheel is either a 157 tooth or 164 tooth. need to count

And you know since your running a 50 oz balance you need that balance flexplate

    So you either need a
    157 tooth 50oz

    or

    164 tooth 50oz balance.

I do not think it was a combination that came from the assembly line. YOu may have to go through a performace parts place or that combo, but I assure you it is available and done pretty normally.

EDIT I had it backwards its the 157 tooth 50oz not available at parts store.

Not in his original post Bob but he will be running the stock converter I believe and taken from the description

The 157-tooth flywheels are available in 28 or 50 oz.
Due to the unique offset of these flexplates, they will not work in conjunction with an OEM 12" torque converter.

And just cause LOL, they call it a flywheel and flexplate in next sentence LOL

Speedway is good place, I have always had great customer service there:bouncy: and there prices are ussually hard to beat!

The 164 tooth 50oz balance is standard replacement, part number FRA-205.

The 157 tooth 50 ounce I'm not sure about. Let me go grab the Pioneer catalog again and see if I can find one. theres one on ebay right now for about $85 I think it was.

    edit: bad info

You would probably know better than I would, all I know is every flexplate I ever owned was replaced with a flywheel:drive:. Not sure which one of them is standard replacement I may have it backwards.

164 tooth is AOD, it has the larger bell housing then a c4. I just looked through the Pioneer catalog and they don't list any 157 tooth flexplates with 50 oz. balance. The Stock Flexplate is a FRA-203 for all Mavericks and small Fords with auto up to 1976. that is a 157 tooth flexplate.

Looks like they went to a 50oz. balance in 81 and dont show any after that year with a 157 tooth geat.

Ya Adam that looks like what he needs. Weird that they say it fits a year range of stock applications and Pioneer dosnt list anything with those specs. Maybe for some reason they don't make that application but it sure seems to be out there, see it listed a couple other places as a stock part.

Ya make sure it is the right tooth count. Most 50oz. applications are a 164 tooth but you need 157. should also be 13.3" O.D.
