1972 mercury comet with a maverick front end. It has a 1992 5.0 motor in it.
Are they any good? And would it bolt to my 92 5.0?

Might bolt up, although you would need to check that your flex plate fits inside the bell housing.

The biggest problem with the FMX is that hardly anyone works on them. Most shops can work on the C4 or C6, ask one of them about rebuilding an FMX.

They can be good transmissions they put them into 100,000's of Ford and Mercury's starting in 1969.

The FMX has been around since the mid to late 1950s!
They just didn't call it an FMX from the start.
It was the Cruise-O-Matic and Merc-O-Matic before it was FMX.

Tough as nails, great transmissions. Better than a C-4, nearly as good as a C-6. The bellhousing can be swapped to fit the engine.

The FMX is a good transmission - tough as nails? maybe not but they are good for towing heavy loads. There is more internal friction in the FMX than in a C4 so for drag racing the C4 has the advantage. The case of the C4 is also a lot lighter than the case of the FMX..... 10 pounds = 1 hp so while the FMX is good under some conditions in a light car with acceleration choose the C4.

FMX is not nearly as strong as a C6. The FMX uses the same clutches as an AOD transmission. The FMX is fairly heavy being that it uses a cast iron center. The real advantage I like about the transmission is that it is simple. First they can be completely rebuilt without removing the transmission from the car. The guts will come out just by removing the tailshaft and the pan. It is fairly difficult to find shift kits for them but you dont really need one anyhow. If you want a nice performance shift on these all you need to do is increase the main line pressure by adding in a few spacers behind the main line pressure spring. I ran a FMX in a Blown 351w for years. The transmission would only last about 1/2 a season at the track which turns out to be about the same as a C-4. But as I mentioned its nice to be able to replace all the clutches without having to pull the transmission.
