The other day while I was checking bumpers and valances for my maverick I came across a mustang II (several actually) so I checked the door code for the axle and I found one that had the "X" axle which according to my research should be a 8" posi w/ 3.55's... I asked the office guy how much for a 8" third member... first he said he didn't have any... than I told him some of his mavericks, pinto's, and mustang II have them, than he said $175... which would be a good deal ONLY if I can drop it in and run as is but if I got to do anything to it it'll cost about the same or more as just redoing my old one and buying one of those $280 posi's on ebay (which is abit more than I want to spend)...

$170 ... differential bearing install and gears setup (labor)
    $175 ... junk yard 8" posible posi w/ 3.55's
$90~ .. posi rebuild kit (clutches...)
    $100 ... differential bearing kit
    $150 ... new gears

Theres all these probable combinations that I can't decide if it's worth it... Sents it's at a they pull it I can't just pull it off myself to atleast check the gears out and see what I can see about it being a trak lock... If I asked them to pull it they will most likely expect me to buy the thing even if it happens to not be what I want.... I'm just tired of not being able to make any progress on this car... What would you do in this situation? I am on a tight budget (I hate to admit it but I work at a major retail store). Thank you.

can you get under it to look at the tag?
posi w/ 3.55's should be (3L 55) on the tag

my initial plan is to just rebuild the 8" in my car which would cost me about $420 (gears, bearing kit, and rebuild/settings labor), the whole posi/trak lock thing is what will through the cost upwards toward $700 to $800 plus... is it worth it?

I wasn't sure on the tag info so I didn't bother crawling under the thing to check that. I was just checking the door tags that time.

If it turns out to be good I would pay it in a heart beat.

If I were you I would not be asking about if or not the price was to high.I have looked off and on for about 10 yrs. for a 8'' trac loc found 2 the frist was not for me and did not know it was a trac loc untill I got it to the shop for a customers car I was pi$$ed because I have looked so long .The second fell in my lap and I payed 250 bucks for it and did not even think about it twice and it had 3.00 gears in it and I wanted 3.55 but I felted the price was worth it . So get your tools get your belly in the dirt and get it .

    Jay

p.s. check the mileage on the car that will give you a ldea it you need to overhaul it ..
