I had to remove the ball joints from my uca yesterday, started grinding away the 39 years of crud and got carried away. Now there down to bare metal. Has anyone done something other than chrome(not a low rider) to make the underside look... you know COOL? if so, what colors did you use and do you have some pictures. these days my work on the mav is subject to my wallet, and its empty. so i do what i can.
Other than paint, the big thing these days seems to be powder coating. You can get it done in any color too.
Jamie Miles would be the guy with the answers in the powder coat department. I've been around it from time to time and everything that I have seen powder coated was bare steel. That being the case, you would need to sand any coating out of the bushing holes and then press new ones in after powder coating is complete being careful not to mess up the finish.
You would want them totally bare/no bushings to powder coat them, since they will be cooked in an oven at around 450 degrees. I personally wouldn't bother powder coating anything on the bottom side of the car, unless your going for a show car that won't be driven much.
Is POR 15 a shiney black finish or flat black? I've been using Rust Bullet Black Shell and it is a high gloss hard as nails finish.
I was curious because I found Eastwood's rust encapsulator to be cheaper that POR 15 or Rust Bullet but the only black they have is a flat black.
Spray paint is always cheap. Powder coating is awesome, on a daily driver, it's easy to clean, and holds up well, but it can cost a fair amount of money.
My tubular MII A-frames came bare metal so I was going to use spray cans myself. Since I started building this Maverick, if I needed to use spray can paint, I have stuck to the really good automotive grade sprays. Costs more but saves you in the long run. In the past I've wasted way too much money on spray cans from Walmart or K-Mart. Mention to a painter that you've used Krylon on your car and they cringe.
