I went with 6" round ones, no issues at all.

    Nope, they just bolted in.

I think the early cars don't have the provisions for them, but mine did.

I have 5 1/4 in mine and they bolted in but had to cut the kickpanels to get the panels back on. U have any pix w/ the panels back in place? I still have the pass side panel out cuz doing some wiring and plan on removing heater box. I don't have a pix in my gallery of the dr side but cut circular hole to replace the panel. Will post one tommorrow _ If I can remember it. I don't see any way to put these size spk's in w/o cutting the panel - If for no more than letting the sound out.
    Maybe Im missing something!

I think maybe he meant without cutting steel, as in "bolts right in". Putting a speaker behind a kick panel without a hole or grill would undoubtedly sound muffled.

i don't have pics of them installed, but here's my kick panel.

It fits fine, and doesn't have clearance for the actual speaker, The holes are just for the sound.

I think the holes came factory in '73. I have 73 Comet kick panels.

OK - We're on the same page as far as cutting something. Ur kick's do look like they have fac cutouts. Ur car is 75 mine is 73 and mine do not have any holes - until now :dancing:.
I still cud'nt get the panels to go back and mount in place w/ those size spk's w/o cutting the panels. I have seen some on here w/ smaller spk's mounted behind the panels w/o any mod's. I just don't think the smaller spk's mounted so low wud give me the performance I desire. I think If the spk's were mounted higher on the doors smaller spk's wud work for me.
I have component spk's in the kicks; eventually I plan on taking the tweeters out of the woofers and mounting them high on the door panels. I do believe that wud improve overall performance.

the speakers i used were off a neon or something and the mounting flange is very thin. I would see having a problem using aftermarket ones since the flanges are thinker.

6/8" is always the way to go (y)

    mine sound decent,

but when the car is running i cant hear anything over the exhaust :D

Thanks for this post! Now I know where I can put front speakers. I didn't realize that there was a spot for speakers - there are no holes cut for speakers in the kick panel, just behind. There's a round hole in the metal, but a square outline to be cut out in the kick panel. I guess Radios were optional in these cars?

Up through 1972, there were no factory provisions for front kick panel speakers. There is an access hole so that you can get to the plates that the door hinges bolt to ... it is rectangular.

From 1973 on, that was changed to allow for a speaker to be bolted in.

I have had a 71 and my current 72 Comets, and had kick panel speakers, but it took some fab work. In the 71, I had 5x7s with some large magnets, and that took some cutting of the metal panel. They were probably overkill. If you go big with the rear deck speakers, that is where most of your bass will come from anyway.

In the 72, I was running some 4 inch that surface mounted to the kick panel. The grille encased the speaker and the magnets were a medium size. Placing them right meant that the magnet slipped into that access hole with no problem.
