Looks like my 10 year project Maverick will be together soon. It's a dedicated Bracket car. It's also a '74 which means that with small bumpers, and aluminum head 302 the front end sits way high. I need to get the front end down and go to a drag race spring. Anybody have any recommendations on which springs to buy?
Cut out one round at a time if you go that route, personally I`d call AFCO & tell them what you have & let them recommend what you need.I`ve had my car 3 yrs & if I wanted to go into Debt I could finish it this summer but I`m not going to do that so it will be a while before mine races also.
I can't say exactly what a part number would be but I do know for fact that drag combos would need MORE coils up front rather than fewer due to requiring extra stored energy which aids in quick suspension rise time and helps weight transfer to the rear tires. So, basically you want to end up with a taller spring having more coils but less rate per inch(usually thinner diameter) so the static ride height ends up closer to what you're after. This is the way all drag springs are designed and you might want to also look into a coil over conversion for the stock a-arms. BTW, nice to see you around here again. Your old 71' Comet GT is finally getting worked on again. Engine is still in progress and color combo will initially have the factory red top and matching red hood/side stripes like the factory SHOULD have made available, IMHO. I also have to say that the body is in excellent condition and remarkably well preserved. Thank you very much for taking decent care of the car during the time that you guys had it and making my life much easier during the resto process.
I'm not going to cut the coils. I've done that before, but I need a softer spring. Groberts101, nice to see you're restoring the Comet. I still regret letting it go. But, I can't keep them all. I have too many projects going now. It's hard to keep them going. I'm re-restoring two I did 20-25 years ago plus finishing up my Mav and my Bronco.
Then you're a far bigger(and richer).. man than I. Sheesh, I can barely finish 1 car at a time! lol Wishing you lots of luck and plenty more power to ya with all that loaded up on your plate. Look forward to seeing your rides.
