I have a '76 Maverick 4-door that I am trying to change the fuel filter on. The reason is that when I drive for more then 1 1/2 hours or get to less then 1/2 a tank of gas it likes to sputter and lurch, if I try to send more fuel into the engine, it stalls. I have been told that the problem is most likely that the fuel filter is clogged. The problem is that I can't find the fuel filter to change it. Where might I find it?
    Thanks!

Is it a V-8 or a I-6??? The V8 two barrel has a filter cannister that crews right into the carburetor float bowl on the front. The six may be the same not too sure.Never owned a 6 and its been a loooong time since I touched one.

There is also a sock type filter in the tank on the pick up. Not sure why 1/2 tank fuel would change how much it lets through though.

Fuel pick up in the tank may have rotted off.Hence the 1/2 tank stumble/die...

It has been in regular use for the last 4 years, only within the last month has this been happening. Could the pick up still have rotted off?

DANGIT! i think you just explained an issue ive been noticing. i thought it was vapor locking or a bad adjustment on the carb. randomly when i accelerate it will stagger like it isnt getting enough fuel and i even changed the carb. mavman you da man! thanks,

A bad fuel filter doesn't care how much gas is in the take. I agree with everyone it could be the pickup tube is not pulling from the bottom of the tank.
