hey guys how do I install the fuel pump. I was mostly looking for recommendation as to what location for least amount of noice. It's the holley pump. I don't want to have to turn on a switch to activate the pump, can I just wire it into the ignition? http://www.holley.com/12-150.asp
More important than how you wire it up is how you hang it. It will be LOUD!@ Put some sort of rubber between the bracket and where you mount it to absorb some of the sound and vibration. Otherwise, wire it up so it doesn't come on until you hit START. My fuel pump and fan won't come on until the solenoid portion that is triggered by START of the ignition is triggered.
Mine is back underneath the rear but it is where the fuel tank used to be so it's probably no help to you. Just a thought but if you put the gas pump on a switch, and it's out of sight, anyone stealing the car won't get far. I know guys who do this with the ignition also.
Hang it on the frame, back near the fuel tank as low as you can get it. Then put rubber grommets betwee it and the frame. I even went so far as to hang it on small tabs with grommets on top and bottom, to both make it hang lower and have extra sound insulation. Mine is literally hanging off the frame. It is silent now, but used to me pretty loud, and you could hear it over the super44 flowmasters. Sorry for the old picture. I still haven't replaced the brass fittings. Those are the rear spring shackles, to give you a better idea of where this picture is on the car.
make sure your back as far as you can and as low ,these pumps are pushers no pullers ,they even can loose prime ,if its to high
And they get even LOUDER if they start to cavitate. Before I hung it down like the picture, if I got down to 1/4 tank, it would start to get WAY too loud, and when you looked at the clear fuel filter just before the pump, you could see bubbles. Mine is mounted right next to the tank outlet, and low enough that you can see it from the back of the car.
My holley was loud. When it went out, I went with the Mr Gasket pump. Much quieter, seems to supply enough fuel. Mine is mounted to the drop down of the trunk, right above the tank. Can't see it, or hear it once the engine is running.
do I need a relay for this installation? where do I get an inertia switch from, that seems like a good idea. And how many fuel pumps do I need? Any recommendations on a fuel pressure gauge? either mounted in the cabin or near the carb is fine.
Mo You can get a inertia switch from any late model EFI car or truck. Some 80s & 90s cars were the trunk some are in the passanger side front kick panel. Jay
You could aslo hook the pump to an oil pressure sensitive kill switch. This allowes the engine to quit running if you loose oil pressure. Mount it low and close to the tank and or sump the tank for best fuel delivery under hard accelleration.
mo, the pump you have is pretty quiet. i used it on my buddys 69 mustang. i usually cut up some radiator hose use those pices to isolate the pump from the car. scoopers location is a great location to put it. you should put a filter in the hose that goes from the tank to the pump. i should have an inertia switch somewhere that you can have. you will want to use a relay located in the trunk.
If you want a fuel pressure gauge in the cabin it will cost a lot more. The isolator costs at least $125. You do not want a fuel line running into the cabin. I mounted mine on the cowl in front of the windshield.
