Has anyone while replacing their fuel tank installing rubber fuel tank insulator strips? I have seen them on other type of tanks but not on a Maverick. I figure it would help with noise transfer and possible chaffing.
I don't think I've ever seen any, on any of the cars I've owned. Probably not a bad idea in your case, you wouldn't want to wear the paint off between the trunk floor, and the tank.
How would the tank be grounded if the car is painted and the tank painted like I have seen recently? Also do you know how the some of the newer GM tanks work because that is the isolator material I was going to use. I have also saw rubber isolator material used in tank straps as well.
You should ground your tank (or sender) directly anyway. Newer tanks that use the insulator are plastic (or the ones I have worked on atleast). Usually there are two strips of rubber that align with a body rail or seam that the tank "squeezes up to" once the straps are tightened down. Like this stuff: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-universal-fuel-cell-gas-tank-strap-pads-insulator-/281223740535?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item417a3dbc77&vxp=mtr
On the Falcon I am working on the locking ring for the sending unit has a screw in it to ground the tank sending unit and would also ground the tank, you would just have to put a screw in the frame someplace or run a ground wire to it
That is the same type stuff I was looking at. I was planning on running a seperate ground on the sender.
I don't think the tanks were painted from the factory. they would be grounded through the strap bolts to the frame. I think the...one wire...sensors use the screw.
I am using a 2 wire fuel sending unit in the tank that was built for the car to work with the EFI set up. I was going to use the isolator material between the tank and the body.
I think the insulator makes good sense. I plan on doing the same thing. Just run a ground wife like you spoke of and you will be all set.
I noticed that my fuel gauge didn't work after I did my tank mod. I went back and cleaned the ground and all is fine (two wire plug).
Here are pictures of the fabricated stainless steel tank for the car, the straps and the other items for the tank.
