My wife talked me into going to yard sales this morning. Didn't find anything interesting, except at a church 5 miles from the house. They were having a yard sale & VW Car Show. I went to the table to see if any car was welcomed. They said, of course, we have a general car show also. So, I went home & got the 73 Comet & 72 Sprint. Ended up coming home with 4 awards (trophy's). The 72 Sprint got "Best Interior" & "Best In Class". The 73 Comet got "Best Engine" & "Best Of Class". I haven't figured out the difference between "Best IN Class" & "Best OF Class". I do know that the "Best OF Class" was a bigger trophy....The name of the Car Show was "4th of July Blast". So, we had a wonderful 4th!!! Hope you all have a wonderful 4th also.... Got a new member for the MCCI also.....WooHoo!!!!!
Congrats ... I went to a car show today. Didn't get a trophy with the Grabber ...... a victim of discrimination again. The show had trophies for 20 best cars. There were about 120 cars or so there. Two judges were grading the cars .... they went over mine inside and out and underneath and the one judge commented to the other what a really nice car it was. I figured for sure I had a trophy because they went over my car much longer than some of the other cars. Trophy time comes and nothing for the Grabber but here is an example of what beat me out. An all original 69 Mustang Fastback, all original interior which was faded and actually had duct tape holding the side of one seat together. The Chrome on the automatic shifter was peeling off. The car had new paint but the engine bay was pretty much original also - he got one. Parked next to me was a 69 Super Bee. Had new paint but he reused most of the chrome on the outside of the car was well as the inside. He did not open his trunk or engine compartment and the guy even commented to me that he probably was out of the running because he had left the car closed up. Well .. he got a trophy as well and they didn't even see his engine, trunk or look underneath! Oh well ... no biggie for me ... lots of folks stopped to talk about the car ... but my 5 year old son always gets upset when we come home empty handed. I figured for sure he would be walking up and getting a trophy for us! Interestingly there were quite a few nice early 70 vettes there and none of them one a trophy either. Every Mustang and Camaro did get a trophy ... there were about 3 of each ... The Super Bee the guy had there had black exterior and black interior with black vinyl top. Supposedly a Super Bee historian told him they only made 5 black Superbee's and only one with a Vinyl top so his was a 1 of 1 car. He said he recently turned down an offer of $96,000. good for him Dan, if someone offers you 69,000.00 for your grabber take it!!! and don't look back! your grabber is one of the nicest around and should win a trophy every time its entered in a show!! they just don't know how or what to judge I suppose.
I hate when that happens Dan. Whenever I go to car shows, I don't expect anything. I just look at having a good time, talking to people about Mavericks & Comets. Plus, trying to recruit for the MCCI. I love talking cars....
that's why i gave up on car shows. too many politics these days. your cars are definitely some of the nicer cars to be seen dan.
I still like the shows ... matter of fact ... my car got the same if not more attention than the Super Bee parked next to me. It was in a Mall Parking lot so lots of families were stopping by either before or after shopping. I just thought for sure my son was gonna get to go up in front of the crowd to claim a trophy ... it would have made his day!
hey man way2go! then again the Maverick was made back in the 70's it was made to take out the sales of the VW... so it did its job at the show too i hear what you mean sometimes the trophy does mean something with the people your with to see you or as you said your son to get the trophy. it nice to have your son to be proud of you. what you said reminds me of somone i go with to shows some times... the son always looks disapointed that his dad didn't win i think my dads love to see me win in a show... but to me now days its like whatever.... i mean i got beat by a total trailer queen 3 weeks ago which the guy didn't even build himself... but... it was a way cleaner car so yeah congrats to him! just last week i got beat for the 3rd time in a modified class the last 3 years by the same car! lol! funny though, it just had a really nice paint job lowered, wheels and a stock motor.... guess thats modified! so yeah sometimes i don't care other times i'm like ok? but yes you are right the best is when you get to talk to people and get to hear stories.... even ones like one my wife heard last week from a father telling his son.... "Son look its a Maverick! That is the most ugliest car ever made!" i found that more funny then anything else! and if i wanted a trophy so bad i'd go buy one since the entries are more the the trophys worth... lol!
When I first pulled in I popped the trunk and started setting up some folding chairs. A father and his son ... about 10 years old I guess ... came over. The father said " We saw your Maverick driving on the road while we were coming here" Then he says that his son has never seen a Maverick before so he turns to his son and asks him "Have you ever seen a Maverick before? ... and his son says ... Yeah .. saw this one while we were driving here ..." Of course get the usual ... I had one of those ... A group of other guys were mesmerized by it and asked if I would sell it ... I said no of course ... he said how much would it take ... I told him at least $20,000 .... he just shook his head and agreed. I just think its funny watching people walking down the line of cars and the Grabber always gets a double take and then they gotta come see what it is. I think there are lots of folks that don't know ... The first thing a lot of people do is look at the info card in the window to see what the heck it is ...
I don't know Dan. The judges must be pals with somone to overlook your Grabber. That car is a winner in my book. We also took both of our Mavericks to a show this past weekend. It was a local AACA judged show so that meant we could sit back and enjoy the beautiful weather and all the beautiful cars. There were only 7 cars in our class and the 77' Mav took 1st. place and the Stallion took 3rd. place. Second place went to a 1977 Caddy. The 77' Maverick has beaten that Caddy 3 years in a row and the Caddy's owner really gets ticked off about it. I don't know what the judges see that rules the Caddy out of 1st. place, but I think the Caddy's owner may be under the impression that we are 'in' with the judges because we are friends with one of them. That is not the case. Last year our friend got assigned our class to judge and he switched classes with someone else because he knew our car was one of the cars he had to judge and he wanted to be as impartial as possible. In my opinion, he did the right thing. But I've been to other shows were it was pretty clear that the judges were picking thier friends cars over cars that were much better than the eventual winners. Maybe the SuperBee's owner was buddies with the judge or judges. Who knows? I can understand what a thrill it is for the kids of the winners to accept the trophies when Dad or Moms car wins. It's worth it just to see the smiles of pride on the kids faces. There will be other shows. When you do win, make sure you get a picture of your son when he accepts the trophy. If he's like other kids I have seen, he'll have a smile on his face a mile wide. That alone will be worth more than any trophy there is.
The Maverick outcast legacy will live forever. I go to shows to have fun and talk to the people. If I win something, It's considered a bonus.
winning It is disapointing when I don't win at car shows. Usually its the classification of the cars causing unfair compition. When cars are judged by the club or host, they have there own rules or points that must be met to recieve an award. They have a tough job depending on what what shows up. When the there is a popular vote system, the show car people vote for the car they like best in each class. We are at the mercy of many different things. It nice to win but, realy I don't think any of us are losers. People will go home and say, "did you see that Maverick in the show? They will take pictures. This will be remembered longer than who won. One time I was at a show with my '69 Mach 1 with my friends '69 six pak 4speed Super Bee in the muscle car class. I won, he did not! I think people just liked the looks of a '69 Mach 1 better. It did cause hard feelings. If the show would have been "judged" it may have been different. That was the last show we did together but were still friends.
First, I think that if your son really wants to go up and get an award, you have to teach him that the joy of car shows is truly in the participation rather than the bling. It would be unfortunate if he thought car shows were for getting trophies. I think everybody that goes to a car show and is upset that they didn't get a trophy should be required to actually judge one. There is not much joy in having owners follow you around and complain to you when there inferior cars don't win. They all need to grow up. Car shows should be about the cars and the conversations, not a $2 trophy. Judging by the pictures of your car on this site, you deserve some kind of trophy. That car is beautiful.
i dont care what they say....,you car is sweet and i only wish one day mine looked that good... it probably wont...since i like roddin and driving.... but too bad you didnt get one....
