Completing the 71 Grabber, I rewired with a Francis wire kit (excellent). The only problem is the gas gauge is pegged full. Whether I wire it through the gauge regulator or not. It has a good ground to the inner fender. Any ideas??? Thanks Jeff
There is a voltage regulator on the back of the dash gauge assembly. One side of the regulator is tied to 12 volt line through a resistive wire. This cuts the voltage down to a smaller level. The other side goes to the gauge. On the second terminal of the gauge, the line goes back to the sending unit in the gas tank. The second terminal on the sending unit goes to ground. It is actually tied into the same ground as all the lights in the back of the car.
First let me say thank you very much for this information. I am not really up on wiring. I did notice this resistive wire in the wiring diagram I used when I rewired the car. Now that the resistive wire is not in the new wiring is there a way to determine what it stepped the voltage down to, and can I wire in a similar resistor? Thanks Again Jeff
I spoke with a long time Ford mechanic who advised me that these gauges run on 9.5 volts. Now to find the right ohms resistor. Hope someone finds this helpfull.
