Here's my latest plan on a gas tank for the 73 maverick:

Install a new gas tank from a 1969 cougar, which has a center fill tube, and route the exhaust pipes(dual) to exit out the side of the car in front of the rear wheels. Chrome tips of course.

The cougar tank is wider but with out the muffler in the back it will fit nicely. As far as the strap hangers go, I have a new hanger bar for the front for the straps to attach.

The cougar tank size is 30 1/4X22X9 for the 69
    and 32 5/8X24 1/2X 8 for the 64 to 68
    Any suggestions or warnings?

Here is a link to an article I wrote about using a Mustang tank. I'm not sure how different it is from the Cougar but it would probably be close to having to do the same mods.

What year mustang tank did you use and what did you do with your exhaust system? What do you think about the exhaust exiting in front of the rear tires?
