Anyone know for a fact if a 1976 gas tank will fit a 1971 , and if so is the filler neck the same?

Yes, it will fit. You will need the 76 straps and the tank might rub along the bottom of the valance panel. You can easily pull on the bottom of valance to put a slight bow in it to clear the tank. Nobody will ever notice it. I did it to my 77 when I converted to small bumpers.

when i put the '77 tanks in my '71/'73 i didn't have to do anything to the valance...what Dennis is talking about is it will touch the tank... NOT be to where you will have to bend the valance to clear...frank...:bouncy:

This is true, it does just touch. However, due to normal vibrations, I prefer to slightly bend it out so it is not touching at all. JMO

The filler neck in my 77 is off set from the center of the tank. Are'nt the early 70 tank filler necks centered? A 76 tank might fit into your early 70 Mav. but would'nt you have to reroute the filler tube?

All 71-77 tanks are the same other than capacity.

Thanks Tom. Good tank site. Now, if they would make one with a centered filler neck so I won't have to run my exhaust through the leaf springs. I guess I'm gonna break down and follow Dennis's lead and modify the Mustang tank to fit.
