Well guys I am back to the board. I am going to keep my burnt maverick and just re-do it into a drag car. I want to strip it down and repaint it so I need to take the glass out. I have a guy that will do it for 100 bucks but there are no guarantees about breaking the glass or not. So should I try to find a way to do it myself or take the chance with this glass guy? Also where can I find a widshield for a 71? Its got a small hole in it from the fire.... Thanks

    Lox

Hey Lox, glad to see you're going to keep the Mav. I have an extra windshield if you want it. Easiest way to get the front and rear glass out without breaking it is to cut the gaskets and replace them later. I broke the first windshield I tried to remove. Just remove all the trim (that's a real pain too) then take a utility knife and cut the gasket along the edge of the glass. Once you get it all they way around it is easy to pop the glass out from inside. Give me a PM, I might have time to stop by tomorrow on the way home.

Lox. Good news on keeping the Maverick. Glad to hear from you again.
You can get the back glass out yourself if you're careful. I managed to and I'm not exactly known for my finesse. As for the front glass I don't have any experience, but since it's broken already I say go for it. What's the worst that can happen?

What about the 1/4 glass...is it bolted in? I have never been back there because of the roll bar that is in the car...

the qtr glass is easy, just remove the screws that hold the locking clasp to the body then swing the window out a little further to gain access to 3 phillips head screws, if I remember correctly you only have to remove the center screw and loosen the top and bottom ones because they are slotted.

A word of caution. If the front windshield should break, you can still get reproduction ones. But if the rear one should break, you're out of luck. I just had a new windshield installed in our Stallion and the glass company told us they can't get the rear glass because it's not reproduced yet. Just do what Maverick- Matt says and take your time. Just be carefull cutting the gasket near the edge of the glass. Even the smallest chip on the edge of the glass can cause a crack to travel across the windshield and destroy it.

Jean who is the manufacturer of your new windshield. Did it seal well as I have heard that the reproduction glass is thinner than the originals.

Mav70; yep, the glass is thinner. It works quite well, you just have to be determined to make it seal. I went to a glass shop, and they power sealed it with a gun using compressed air. Had to go back a couple times, but it is sealed now.

The sticker on the windshield say: " Libby Owens Ford-- A member of the Pilkington Group. Made in Finland." The reproduction glass is slightly thinner than the stock glass, so there is a very good chance of water leaks. After the car is painted, the glass company will come back out to our place and run a strip of black urathane sealer between the glass and the gasket, and some more sealer between the gasket and the body of the car. That should prevent any water leaks from occuring. This glass company has done this with other cars we have them put windshields in and none of them have had any problems with water leaks.

After having all the sealant pumped in there ... If that glass has to come out again ... it is gonna be a really messy job! :)

I tried to use the original method using the black strip caulking made by 3M. I obviously didn't use enough because I have leaks at the top two corners of my windshield. Luckily it only gets wet when I wash it but any recommendations would be grateful.

Did the glass shop inject the sealent under the winshield chrome?

Thanks everyone for the glass information. Mine has wiper streaks that I am not sure I can get out.
Dan, I avoid washing my car with a hose (to much water) I use a duster and detail spray.
